Strong Second Half Pushes Tars Past Chargers

The Tars overcame a halftime deficit to best the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers by a score of 11-8 on the turf at Barker Family Stadium

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2022) – The Tars overcame a halftime deficit to best the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers by a score of 11-8 on the turf at Barker Family Stadium.  With the victory the Tars remain unbeaten, at 6-0.  The Chargers fall to 3-4 in the 2022 campaign.
 
The Tars were led by three point performances from Taylor Kienle and Abigail Cawley; each notched two goals and one assist.  Seven other Tars each tallied one goal.  Isabella Cecchi packed the stat sheet with four draw controls, two caused turnovers, and three groundballs.  Rachel Schlesinger made seven saves between the pipes for Rollins.
 
Katie Williams led all scorers with a hat trick for the Chargers.  Isadora Springer tallied a game high four points with two goals and two assists.  Shaina Doser made six saves, playing the full 60 minutes in goal for Alabama-Huntsville.
 
The Tars won the groundball and turnover battles as they turned the game around at halftime.  The Chargers dominated the first half draw controls, but Rollins battled to an even split in the second 30 minutes to help spark their comeback.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
  • The Chargers opened the game with a pair of quick scores, before Taylor Kienle got Rollins on the board.
  • Alabama-Huntsville responded with two more goals, making the score 4-1.
Second Quarter
  • Taylor Kienle found Abigail Cawley to open the second period.
  • The Chargers again squashed any Rollins momentum with a pair of goals, making the score 6-2, and forcing Rollins to confront their largest deficit of the season.
  • Charlotte Gastonguay tallied, off an assist from Caroline Gastonguay, with nine minutes on the clock to bring Rollins back within three.
  • Both defenses locked down, neither offense could generate a goal for the final nine minutes of the half.
Third Quarter
  • The Tars dominated the third quarter with Abigail Cawley and Liz Fahey combining to start the Rollins rally at the 10:37 mark.
  • Abigail Cawley then fed Abigail DeGroat as the Tars pulled within one, at 6-5.
  • Fahey scored unassisted to bring the teams even, then Taylor Kienle scored unassisted to give Rollins their first lead of the day.
  • The defense clamped down, allowing only three shots, two on target, over the 15 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
  • Rollins pulled away with the Gastonguay sisters connecting for another score, and Ali Rogers finding the back of the net, as the Tars registered a seven goal streak.
  • The Chargers broke a 33 minute goalless stretch, finding the back of the net at the 6:32 mark, making the score 9-7.
  • The two teams would trade goals over the final minutes, with a Claire Reist tally and Paige Kienle goal bookending an Alabama-Huntsville goal. The Tars held on for the three point win. 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will host the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Tuesday, March 15.  First draw against the Cavaliers is set for 12 p.m.
