Rollins Pushes No. 1 Nova Southeastern in 79-73 Defeat

The Tars led midway through the second half against the top team in the nation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (February 19, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team got 32 points from Hutton Yenor, but it wasn't enough to upset No. 1 Nova Southeastern on Saturday. The Tars had a lead halfway through the second half, but the Sharks came back for a 79-73 win. The loss drops the Tars to 14-13 overall, 9-10 in SSC play, while NSU goes to 23-0, 17-0 in league games. 


Yenor led all scorers with his 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, in addition to grabbing three steals and dishing out a team-high five assists. Cade Long poured in 18 points and Kyle Marion added 10. Brooks Cluxton scored six points while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and handing out five assists.
 
RJ Sunahara led NSU with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds, five assists, and a game-high four steals. Sekou Sylla added 18 points and a game-high 10 boards while Eddie Puisis scored 14 points and Nick Smith chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • The Sharks quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes.
  • At the 13:44 mark the lead was as large as 14 (20-6).
  • Rollins went on a 13-0 run to take its first lead of the game, going up 29-25 with 4:04 left in the half.
  • The Tars led by as many as seven before NSU came back to tie things up at 34 at the half.
Second Half
  • Dayton Gumm opened the scoring in the second half, but the Sharks answered with a three shortly thereafter.
  • The lead changed hands five more times throughout the second half.
  • A pair of Yenor free throws gave Rollins a 55-52 lead with 10:36 to go, but that would prove to be the last time the Tars led in the game.
  • Nova Southeastern scored the next five points to go up 57-55 with 9:24 left.
  • A dunk from Sunahara pushed the Shark lead to 66-60 with 3:32 to play.
  • A Cluxton layup brought the Tars to within two (70-68) with 1:12 to go, but NSU made seven of its eight free throws in the final minute to secure the 79-73 win.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Boca Raton next Saturday for the final game of the 2021-22 regular season. Rollins will battle Lynn at 4 p.m.
