Big Second Half Leads Tars to Victory Over Saint Leo

The Tars overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to rally for an 87-84 win on Saturday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 12, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team used a strong second-half performance to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit against Saint Leo on Saturday, eventually hanging on for an 87-84 win. The victory improves the Tars record to 14-11 overall, 9-8 in SSC play, while the Lions fall to 9-13, 4-10 in league games.
 
Hutton Yenor led the Tars with 25 points while Dayton Gumm chipped in with 17 points and Cade Long added 16. Kyle Marion scored 12 points and dished out a game-high seven assists and Brooks Cluxton notched a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Wade Coomer led all scorers with 27 points for Saint Leo, going 9-for-17 from the three-point line. Cantia Rahming added 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. Frank Webb, Jr. handed out a team-high six assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • Marion hit a three on Rollins' first possession to give the Tars an early 3-0 lead.
  • An 11-0 run pushed the Tars' lead to 22-9 just 6:08 into the game.
  • Saint Leo rallied, eventually drawing even at 28 with 9:30 to go in the first half.
  • The Lions closed out the half on a 14-2 run, taking a 54-42 lead into the break.
Second Half
  • The Tars came out and scored the first 11 points of the second half, pulling to within a single point (54-53) with 17:15 to go.
  • A dunk by Gumm with 11:45 left put Rollins back in front, 61-60.
  • Saint Leo regained the lead, 71-69, on a Coomer three with 7:01 to play.
  • Rollins then went on a 14-4 run to pull ahead, 83-75, with 2:39 on the clock.
  • The Tars maintained a relatively comfortable advantage through the closing stages, leading by as many as eight (86-78) with just 25 ticks left.
  • Two late Coomer threes made it appear to be a closer game, as Rollins ended up with an 87-84 win.
UP NEXT:
Rollins will host Tampa in its final home game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
