Rollins Tripped Up by Tampa

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 16, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team made a late rally, but ultimately came up short in an 87-77 loss to Tampa on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Tars drop to 14-12 overall and 9-9 in SSC play, while the Spartans improve to 14-8, 10-7 in conference games.
 
Daytona Gumm led the Tars with 22 points while Hutton Yenor tallied 21 points, seven rebounds, and a team-best five assists. Brooks Cluxton added 17 points and a team-leading nine boards and Kyle Marion chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds.
 
Bryan Williams led the way for Tampa with a game-high 23 points in addition to five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Max Jones (21 points) and Mykah Brown (20) also reached the 20-point plateau for the Spartans, while Martin Lakovic pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to goa along with nine points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • Marion opened the scoring just four seconds into the contest with a layup on the fast break off the opening tip.
  • The Tars led by as many as three points on multiple occasions before a 17-4 run for the Spartans pushed the visitors ahead 26-16 with 8:07 left in the half.
  • Rollins trimmed the deficit down to six, but Tampa maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the half, finishing the period on a 5-0 spurt to take a 46-33 lead into the break.
Second Half
  • The Spartans increased their lead to as many as 18 points (56-38) just over three minutes into the second half.
  • Rollins exploded for eight points in less than a minute to nearly cut the deficit in half, pulling to within 10 (56-46) at the 15:49 mark.
  • Tampa stemmed the tide and maintained a double-digit lead for the next 10 minutes.
  • Back-to-back fast break dunks from Cluxton and Gumm highlighted a quick 9-0 rally that made it a six-point game (72-66) at the 5:10 mark.
  • Rollins got to within three (76-73) on a Gumm free throw with 84 seconds left, but the Spartans responded by scoring the next seven points to regain a 10-point advantage (83-73) with 33 seconds to go, and Tampa would hang on for the 87-77 victory.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, Feb. 19 to face No. 1 Nova Southeastern. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
