Rollins Falls to Florida Southern

Marta Tsaneva set new career highs in kills, service aces, and blocks on Thursday

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team fell to visiting Florida Southern on Thursday night, 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 16-25, 27-25) to drop to 7-22 on the season, 2-16 in SSC play. The win moves the Mocs to 14-12 overall and 7-9 in conference matches.
 
Marta Tsaneva set new career highs in kills (13), service aces (5), and blocks (3) to lead the Tars, while Emily Diaz contributed 11 kills. Emma Begley chipped in with eight kills and five blocks (four solo) and Makayla Moran added five kills and a team-high six blocks (one solo). Adriana Lopez led Rollins with 19 digs and Natalie Horsley led all players with 41 assists.
 
Ali Travis had a match-high 16 kills to go along with seven digs for FSC, while Mackenzie Petermann registered eight kills and nine digs. Jana Gilic had eight kills and hit a match-high .471 while collecting a match-best eight blocks (one solo). Beatrice Formilan had a match-leading 21 digs and Mika Garza posted a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • A 3-0 spurt put Florida Southern up 12-8 and the Mocs slowly pulled away from there, building the lead to 20-13.
  • A 4-0 run gave the visitors set point at 24-15, and three rallies later they clinched the set, 25-17.
Set Two
  • Rollins used a 5-1 run to take an early 9-5 lead in the second set.
  • Florida Southern then won seven of the next eight points go up 12-10.
  • A 4-0 burst made it 18-13 FSC, but the Tars fought back and got to within a point at 22-21.
  • The Mocs regained their footing, scoring three of the final four points to win the set, 25-22.
Set Three
  • The Tars quickly jumped out to a 6-2 lead, only to see that evaporate as FSC scored the next four points to make it 6-6.
  • A 4-0 run gave Rollins an 11-7 lead, and this time the Tars wouldn't relinquish it.
  • Rollins pulled away late, scoring eight of the final 10 points to win the frame, 25-16.
Set Four
  • An 8-1 run put the Tars up 14-7 in the fourth.
  • A few points later, Florida Southern responded with an 8-0 burst to take the lead, 16-15.
  • After the Tars tied it up, FSC used a quick 3-1 spurt to go up 20-18.
  • Emily Diaz then scored back-to-back kills to tie it, which were followed by back-to-back errors by the Mocs, putting Rollins ahead by a score of 22-20.
  • After trading sideouts, a kill by Tess Margio gave Rollins set point at 24-22.
  • The Mocs staved off the first set point a kill from Travis, and then Garza scored two straight service aces to turn the tide, giving Florida Southern a 25-24 lead.
  • Begley came up with a clutch kill on the next rally to tie it at 25, but a service error followed by a Petermann kill secured the 27-25 win for the Mocs, giving them a 3-1 win in the match.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will have a week off before they return to action next Friday, Nov. 11, to host Nova Southeastern at 7 p.m.
