NSU Comes Back to Down Tars

Rollins took the first two sets, but the Sharks rallied to win the final three to take the match

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 8, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team got off to a strong start on Saturday, winning the first two sets, but ultimately fell in five sets at Nova Southeastern, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-9. With the loss, the Tars are now 4-13 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while the Sharks move to 11-5 on the season, 5-4 in SSC matches.

Lana Gerard chipped in with eight kills and eight digs while Emma Begley and Makayla Moran each added seven kills. Adriana Lopez had a team-leading 18 digs and Natalie Horsley dished out a match-high 34 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • After NSU won the first point of the match, Rollins rattled off seven in a row to take an early 7-1 lead.
  • The Sharks fought back, winning seven straight points to tie the set at 16.
  • The Tars took six of the next eight points to go up 22-18, but Nova Southeastern got the next four to tie things up once again at 22.
  • Baldridge came up big in the final few points, scoring two kills and a block to help Rollins win three of the last four rallies, clinching the set, 25-23.
Set Two
  • Rollins jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in set two, but the home team battled back to within a point at 9-8.
  • The Tars grabbed the next three points to rebuild their four-point advantage (12-8), but once again the Sharks got back to within one at 13-12.
  • Leading 16-14, Rollins scored the next two points and didn't allow NSU to score on serve until it had built a commanding 24-17 lead.
  • Though Nova Southeastern won four in a row, a Baldridge kill was all it took to close out the set, giving Rollins a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
  • Set three saw the Sharks turn the tide, jumping out to an early 9-4 lead of their own for the first time in the contest.
  • The Tars kept things close until a 7-1 run pushed NSU to a 22-14 advantage, and it wasn't long before Nova Southeastern took the set, 25-17.
Set Four
  • Rollins took a quick 4-1 lead in the fourth and maintained that advantage until a 5-0 run put the home team up 11-9.
  • Back-to-back kills from Baldridge and Gerard tied the set at 13, but NSU then won 10 of the next 11 rallies en route to a 25-16 set win, sending the match to a fifth set.
Set Five
  • The Sharks were able to string together multiple points on five separate occasions while preventing Rollins from doing the same, allowing Nova Southeastern to build an 11-5 lead in the fifth.
  • A 4-1 spurt cut the deficit to just three (12-9), but NSU won the next three points to win the set, 15-9, and with it, the match.
