Volleyball Comes Up Short at Florida Southern

Rollins will look to get back in the win column at this weekend's South Region Crossover tournament

LAKELAND, Fla. (Oct. 11, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-18) defeat on the road at Florida Southern on Tuesday night. The loss moves the Tars to 4-14 on the season, 2-8 in the SSC, while the Mocs improve to 9-7 overall, 4-5 in conference play.
 
Lana Gerard led the Tars with 13 kills and added eight digs, while Emma Begley contributed seven kills and hit .375 and Emma Rome tallied six kills while hitting .429. Natalie Horsley had a team-leading 28 assists and Adriana Lopez picked up a team-best 19 digs.
 
Mackenzie Petermann posted a match-high 16 kills while hitting .316 with seven digs for the Mocs. Ali Travis chipped in with nine kills and 12 digs and Emma Shaddiz added eight kills while hitting .316. Mika Garza dished out a match-high 36 assists and Beatrice Formilan collected a match-best 22 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • The first set was highly competitive, with neither side leading by more than two points throughout the entire frame.
  • The Tars put together the longest run of the set, scoring four straight points to turn a 19-17 deficit into a 21-19 lead.
  • After FSC scored two straight to tie it, the two sides exchanged sideouts for the next seven points, putting Rollins at set point with a 25-24 lead.
  • The Mocs were able to fend off the set point and win the next two to close out the frame with three straight points to win it, 27-25.
Set Two
  • Rollins used a 5-0 run early in set two to go up 10-7.
  • From that point, the two teams traded three-point runs, resulting in a 16-13 lead for the Tars.
  • FSC regained the lead with a 5-0 spurt that gave the home team a 22-20 advantage.
  • The Tars tied it at 22, but the Mocs were able to eke out a 25-23 win in the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
  • Florida Southern won the first three points of the third set and quickly pushed its lead to 6-2.
  • An 11-2 run put the Mocs in full control, leading 18-6.
  • A late 5-1 run got the Tars to within six (24-18), but FSC clinched it on the next serve, winning the set by a 25-18 score to complete the sweep.
 
UP NEXT:
The Tars will head to Hoover, Alabama to take part in the South Region Crossover this weekend. Rollins will kick off the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 14 against West Georgia.
