HOOVER, Ala. (Oct. 14, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team got back in the win column on Friday afternoon, defeating West Georgia 3-1 (27-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17) on the first day of the South Region Crossover tournament in Hoover, Alabama. With the win, the Tars improve to 5-14 overall, while the Wolves drop to 9-14.
Emma Begley led all players with 12 kills and seven blocks (two solo) to go along with a .370 attack percentage, while
Makayla Moran tallied 11 kills and hit .526.
Lana Gerard chipped in with 10 kills and 16 digs to notch her sixth double-double of the season.
Natalie Horsley posted a match-high 40 assists and
Adriana Lopez collected a team-leading 20 digs.
Emilee Harris led West Georgia with 11 kills and added six digs, while Isabella Steffel and Zoe LaBreche each contributed eight kills. Autumn Mayes registered a double-double with 18 digs and a team-best 37 assists, while Sydney Blackmon recorded a match-high 22 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
- After the Wolves jumped out to a 6-4 lead, Rollins went on an 8-2 run to go up 12-8.
- UWG responded with a 4-0 run a few points later that put it back on top, 15-14.
- The lead see-sawed a few more times before the Tars earned the first set point at 24-23.
- After trading sideouts for a few rallies, Rollins was able to put the set away with a block from Horsley and Begley to clinch it, 27-25.
Set Two
- The Tars got things going early in set two, winning five of the first six points and stretching their early lead to 15-5.
- The Wolves then scored seven straight points, but Rollins returned the favor with a 7-0 run of its own, pushing the lead to 22-12.
- A few points later, the Tars took the set by a score of 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
- Set three saw Rollins take a slim 5-3 lead early, only to have UWG rattle off six straight points to take a 9-5 lead.
- After the Tars got back to within a point at 9-8, West Georgia went on a 6-1 run to push its advantage to 15-9.
- Rollins tried to make a late comeback, getting to within three at 24-21, but that was as close as it got as the Wolves won the frame, 25-21.
Set Four
- The Tars held an early 5-2 lead in the fourth, but West Georgia drew even quickly at 6-6.
- A 3-0 spurt gave Rollins a 12-9 advantage, and the Tars maintained a slim lead throughout the middle stages of the set.
- To close out the match, the Tars ended the set by winning eight of the final 10 points, turning a 17-15 lead into a 25-17 win, clinching the match by a 3-1 score.

The Tars will finish the South Region Crossover with a pair of matches tomorrow in Hoover, Alabama. Rollins will take on Christian Brothers at 10 a.m. to open the day, and the Tars will close out the weekend with a 5:45 p.m. contest against Valdosta State.
