WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 19, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team won its second consecutive overtime game on Wednesday with an 84-81 overtime victory over Eckerd. With the win, Rollins moves to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in league play, while Eckerd drops to 2-11, 0-7 against SSC opponents.
Kyle Marion led the Tars with 28 points and four steals while
Hutton Yenor chipped in with 22 points, including 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
Cade Long and
Brooks Cluxton each added 14 points while
Dayton Gumm dished out a team-high five assists to go along with six points and eight rebounds. Cluxton also pulled down a game-high 14 boards to record his sixth double-double of the season.
GianFranco Grafals was Eckerd's leading scorer with a game-high 30 points to go along with a team-high 14 rebounds. Daniel Love also notched a double-double with 27 points, 12 boards, and a game-high seven assists, while David Swedura added nine points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
- The Tritons got on the board first and held an early 4-0 lead in the opening minutes.
- A layup by Gumm tied things up at eight with 12:47 left in the half.
- Eckerd scored the next nine points over the course of 2:43 to pull out to a 17-8 lead.
- Yenor knocked down a jumper with 37 ticks on the clock to make it a three-point game (33-30) before a last-second layup gave the Tritons a 35-30 halftime edge.
Second Half
- Marion poured in the first five points of the half to tie things up at 33 just over a minute into the period.
- A triple by Marion gave Rollins a 36-34 lead and another three by Marion made it 39-36 with 16:10 on the clock.
- Less than a minute later, Yenor knocked down a jumper that pushed his career points total over 1,000, making him the 43rd member of the program's 1,000 Point Club.
- Eckerd rattled off seven straight points to retake the lead, 53-52, with just under eight minutes to play.
- A Cluxton jumper put Rollins back on top, 56-55, with just under six minutes left in regulation.
- The Tars increased the lead to eight (69-61) with 62 seconds to play.
- Rollins led 74-70 with only 13 seconds left in regulation, but a Daniel Love layup with seven seconds left was immediately followed by an Eckerd steal, which allowed Joshua Galloway to score the game-tying basket with only one second remaining.
Overtime
- Long hit a clutch three in the first minute of overtime, and Rollins never allowed Eckerd to even tie the game over the rest of the period.
- Another Long three made it 82-78 with 1:28 to play.
- Cluxton knocked down two clutch free throws in the game's closing seconds to help secure the 84-81 win.
