SAINT LEO, Fla. (January 15, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 90-83 overtime win at Saint Leo. With the win, Rollins moves to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in league play, while Saint Leo drops to 6-9, 3-6 against SSC opponents.
Hutton Yenor led the Tars with 28 points (13-of-18 FGs) and six rebounds while
Kyle Marion chipped in with 25 points, including 4-of-8 from distance.
Cade Long added 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting while
Dayton Gumm dished out a team-high seven assists to go along with 11 points.
Wade Coomer was Saint Leo's leading scorer with 27 points to go along with six rebounds. Francis Sio tallied 15 points, while Frank Webb, Jr. scored 13 points and added nine boards and a game-high nine assists. Cantia Rahming pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lions.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
- The Lions got on the board first and built a 13-2 lead just over five minutes into the game.
- Saint Leo's lead grew as large as 16 (22-6) at the 12:32 mark of the first half.
- A Marion jumper with 3:12 to play got the deficit back to single digits at 31-23.
- Yenor knocked down a jumper with 37 ticks on the clock to make it a three-point game (33-30) before a last-second layup gave Saint Leo a 35-30 halftime edge.
Second Half
- A layup from Tyler Woods tied the game at 43 with 14:38 left in regulation.
- A few minutes later, Gumm went coast-to-coast, turning a steal into a layup to give Rollins its first lead of the day, 51-50.
- Marion drilled a three just over halfway through the period to make it 58-50, capping a 13-0 run for the Tars.
- Saint Leo battled back to retake the lead, 72-69, with 2:06 to play.
- Yenor hit a jumper with 39 seconds left, trimming the deficit to two points (73-71).
- Marion knocked down a pair of clutch free throws with six seconds left, tying the game at 73.
- A last-second shot from Saint Leo rimmed out and the rebound tip-in was deemed to have come after the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
Overtime
- Yenor scored the first four points of OT, putting the pressure on the Lions early in the extra period.
- After Saint Leo tied it at 77, Yenor responded with back-to-back jumpers to give Rollins an 81-77 advantage.
- The Tars were nearly perfect in overtime, going 5-for-6 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe, while holding Saint Leo to just two field goals.
- Yenor made a jumper with 57 seconds left and Long and Marion made five free throws in the closing seconds to secure the 90-83 win.
