TAMPA, Fla. (January 12, 2022) – The 20th-ranked Tampa Spartans proved to be too much on Wednesday night as they defeated the Tars, 65-39, in Tampa. With the loss the Tars fall to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while the Spartans go to 16-3, 7-1 in SSC action.
Kymora Westerfield led Rollins with 12 points, going 5-for-10 from the field.
Lucy Leen and
Asia Newsome each chipped in with eight points.
Yoke Tassent hauled in a team-high six rebounds and added a pair of assists.
The Spartans were led by Aliyah Abney's 16 points, with Audrey Ramsey and Mya Giusto each tallying 10 points. LaShayla Wright-Ponder led all players with 11 rebounds while Giusto dished out a game-high six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- The Tars struck first, scoring the game's first five points.
- Tampa answered with seven consecutive points, but a three from Leen put Rollins back in front, 8-7, just past the midway point of the quarter.
- Rollins maintained a lead for the rest of the period, extending its advantage to 15-11 on a triple from Niya Pluviose in the final minute.
Second Quarter
- The Tars went cold to start the second quarter, allowing Tampa to rattle off 14 straight points to take a 25-15 lead.
- The Spartans made 11 of their 21 field goals in the frame, taking a 36-25 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
- Rollins continued to struggle from the field, going 2-for-14 in the quarter.
- The Tars scored just six points in the period, with Tampa going on an 11-0 run to close it out, giving the home team a 52-31 lead.
Fourth Quarter
- Tampa increased its lead to 60-31 before a triple from Caroline Swartz ended the rally.
- That Swartz three would prove to be the only field goal in the quarter for the Tars as Tampa claimed a 65-39 victory.
