Spartans Hold Off Tars, 86-77

Rollins trailed by only four at the half, but Tampa pulled away late for an 86-77 win

TAMPA, Fla. (January 12, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team dropped a close contest at Tampa on Wednesday night, falling to the Spartans by a score of 86-77. With the loss, Rollins drops to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in league play, while Tampa improves to 10-3, 6-2 against SSC opponents.
 
Hutton Yenor led the Tars with 11 points and six rebounds while Kyle Marion chipped in with 16 points, five boards, and four assists. Cade Long added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Dayton Gumm dished out a team-high six assists.
 
Max Jones was Tampa's leading scorer with a game-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Martin Lakovic also posted a double-double with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Derrick Felder scored 20 points and added eight boards and a game-high eight assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • The Spartans scored first and built a 13-8 lead less than three minutes into the game.
  • Rollins took a 14-13 lead thanks to back-to-back threes from Marion with 16:06 left in the half.
  • Tampa pulled ahead to lead by as many as nine (34-25) with 5:45 to play before halftime.
  • A 7-0 run brought the Tars back to within two (34-32) with 2:15 left, and Rollins was within four at the break, trailing 38-34.
Second Half
  • The Tars scored the first five points of the second half to take a brief 39-38 lead.
  • After Tampa retook the lead, Rollins wrestled it back on a triple from Long that put the Tars ahead, 49-46, with 16 minutes to play.
  • The Spartans again responded, but Rollins fought back, taking a 71-70 lead on a Yenor jumper with 4:44 on the clock.
  • A Lakovic three with 2:59 to play put Tampa ahead, 75-73, which would prove to be the final lead change in the game.
  • Gumm hit a layup with 1:06 left to make it an 80-77 game, but the Tars couldn't connect on any shots for the rest of the contest as Tampa hit six free throws in the final minute to pull away, 86-77.
