MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (September 17, 2021) - Rollins opened their Sunshine State Conference slate of play with a tough loss to the Barry Buccaneers on Friday evening, losing on the road three set to zero. The Tars fall to 3-6 on the season, while Barry remains unbeaten at 5-0.
- The Tars found themselves in an early hole during set one, falling behind 3-0. The lead would grow to as many as seven points for the Buccaneers, but Rollins did not give up. The Tars posted two separate streaks of three straight points mid-match, thanks in large part to their defense at the net. Alexis Yeager and Emma Begley each tallied a pair of solo blocks in the set. Unfortunately for the Tars, a series of attack errors couple with five total service aces from Barry gave the Bucs a 25-20 win.
- Set two was about as evenly matched as you can get. The two teams tied each other a whopping 17 times, and exchanged leads seven times. Neither team ever led by more than two points. It looked as though Rollins would pull out the win, but Barry was able to secure the final four points of the set to secure the 25-23 win. Rollins totaled 12 kills in the set, including five from Riley Spurlin, but were done in by four service errors and two ball handling errors.
- Barry controlled the pace in the third set thanks to thirteen kills and four service aces. Rollins held a 7-6 advantage early on, but a run of nine straight points from the Buccaneers put the set out of reach.
- Riley Spurlin was the leading scorer for Rollins with nine kills. The defense at the net was atrong throughout the night as the Tars totaled ten blocks including six from from Aleix Yeager (three solo) and four from Emma Begley (three solo).
The Tars will have a a quick turnaround as they head to Daytona Beach to take on the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
