Tars Hold On to Capture Series Opener

Rollins improves to 15-1 overall, and 13-1 in Sunshine State Conference play

MELBOURNE, FLA (April 22, 2021)- In the first game of a three game series against Florida Tech, the Tars won the opener, 2-1. Rollins improves to 15-1 overall, and 13-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.  The Panthers drop to 11-11, and 8-9 in conference action.

Ashley Worrell starred again for Rollins, allowing just one run on three hits, tossing a complete game, striking out six, and earning the win.  Chelsea Peace went 1-3 at the plate, launching a homerun, to lead the Tars offensive effort.

Velazquez threw a complete game for the Panthers, while also leading Florida Tech, going 1-3 at the plate, with a homerun.

The game was a defense war for six innings.  After the Panthers slapped a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first, Worrell escaped the jam with pair of groundouts and a strikeout.  Worrell also forced Florida Tech to strand runners in the second and third, before cruising through the fourth and fifth frames.

The Tars took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Chelsea Peace came in clutch once again, smoking a two run homerun to right center field, scoring Ashley Troutman, giving Rollins a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers tried to make a claw back into the contest, getting a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning, with a Velazquez solo homerun.  Worrell would quickly dash any comeback hopes, retiring the next three batters, and sealing the victory.
