WINTER PARK, FLA. (April 24, 2021) - Rollins split a doubleheader against Florida Tech to win the series against the Panthers. Rollins took the first game of the day 9-0, then lost the series finale, 1-0. The No. 8 Tars move to 16-2 overall, and 13-2 in Sunshine State Conference play. Florida Tech now sits at 12-12 overall, and 9-10 in conference action.
Game 1: Rollins 9, Florida Southern 0
Ali Shenefield threw a one-hit shutout, going the distance, and striking out three, leading the Tars.
Raiven Bryant tallied five RBI, and launched a homerun, going 2-2 at the plate.
Ashley Worrell also registered a multi-hit day, and a long ball.
Tyler Jo Colby slapped a pair of doubles, and
Cynthia Whitty recorded a two hit game and scored a pair.
Jordan Lawlis picked up the loss for the Panthers in the circle striking out three and walking three. Cheyenne Nelson recorded the only Florida Tech hit of the game.
Nelson slapped a lead off double in the top of the first, but
Ali Shenefield escaped the frame, striking out Valazquez to end the threat.
The Tars capitalized on a Panther mistake to take a lead in the second.
Raiven Bryant walked then circled the bases on an error by the Panthers shortstop, off the bat of
Lexi Moore. An
Ashley Worrell homerun doubled the Tars lead in the third.
After Shenefield retired the side in order in the fourth, the Tars would balloon the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the inning.
Cynthia Whitty and
Tyler Jo Colby both reached base, and sat in scoring position for
Raiven Bryant, who singled to second base, scoring the pair.
The Tars ended the contest early with a five spot in the fifth. Rollins worked the bases loaded before a Colby double put the Tars on the brink of victory with a two RBI double. Bryant then lofted a shot over the left field fence, scoring three, and sending the game final at 9-0.
Game 2: Rollins 0, Florida Tech 1
Offense was hard to come by in the finale, with both pitchers dominating the diamond.
Ashley Worrell threw a complete game, giving up just four hits, and one run while striking out three. The Tars only managed a pair hits, coming off the bats of
Ashley Troutman and
Cynthia Whitty.
Tina Valazquez picked up the win in the circle for the Panthers. She also tallied the game's lone run, on a homerun.
Both pitchers controlled the game early. The Tars threatened in the fourth, with
Ashley Troutman singling and stealing a pair of bases to sit on third with no outs. However, she was thrown out on a fielder's choice, and Rollins stranded a pair of runners.
Worrell retired 12 consecutive Panthers from the third through the seventh inning, but Valazquez hit her solo shot with two outs in the top of the seventh. The score would prove decisive, as the Tars could not equalize in the bottom of the inning.
