WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 20, 2021) - Facing their third national Top 5 opponent of the young season, Rollins was not able to pull the upset at home on Saturday, falling to the Barry Buccaneers, 6-1.
The first point of the day was awarded to Barry when they took two of three doubles matches. On a positive note,
Alexandra Borg and
Georgina Groth maintained their flawless start to the season, defeating Deniz Khazan and Madeline Bosnjak by a score of 6-3. The Tars teammates are now 4-0 out of position one in 2021.Â
In singles action, there were a number of tight matchups between the two squads. Mariia Skyba defeated
Eve Wasil on court five 6-1, 6-3 for the first singles point of the day. On the featured court, Khazan got a taste of revenge for her earlier loss in doubles when she outlasted Borg 6-3, 6-4. The Buccaneers then clinched the day with a win on court four when Daniela Farfan beat
Polina Vlasova 6-1, 6-3.Â
Out of position two, Groth battled Julie Razafindranaly to the very end. After falling in the first set 6-2, Groth put up a valiant effort before settling for a 7-6 (7-5) finish. On court six,
Maria McKay also took her opponent, Clara Versier, to extra time before losing 7-6 (5-3), 6-2. The longest match of the day happened on court three, and allowed Rollins to avoid the sweep.
Kaitlynn Groves dropped her first set against Kim Moosbacher 4-6, but then bounced back for a gritty 7-6 (7-3) win in set two. In the third and final set between the two, Groves came out on top with an 11-9 final to earn her second point of the day.Â
The loss drops Rollins to 1-3 on the season. They will have another shot at an upset when they take on the #9 Saint eo Lions at home on Tuesday March 23 at 4 pm. They will then wrap up the week with a road trip to Eckerd on Sunday, March 28.Â
