Tars Blank Sharks in SSC Opener

WINTER PARK, FLA. (February 14, 2020) –  Rollins defeated Nova Southeastern 4-0 in the first Sunshine State Conference game of the year for the preseason favorite Tars. 

The shutout is the fifth in nine games for the Rollins (9-0) this season. NSU falls to 8-3, 0-1 SSC.  

Pitcher Ashley Worrell threw all seven innings in the circle, allowing four hits. She racked up six strikeouts and got her fifth win of the season, four by shutout. The sophomore also went 1-4 at the plate.

Five different players got base hits for the Tars. Ashley Troutman went 1-3 at the plate, scored once and had one RBI. Chelsea Peace went 1-2 with one run and one triple. Talia Kentoffio hit 1-2 at the plate with one run while Taylor Waters had a 1-2, one RBI day at the plate.

The Tars scored their first run in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs, Troutman walked, Worrell singled and Peace walked to load the bases. Lindsay Gehring got hit by a pitch and that allowed Troutman to score.

In the bottom of the fourth,  Waters ripped a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Kentoffio to score. Troutman was next up and grounded out to second base, scoring Kara Wagstaff. 

An insurance run came in the bottom of the fifth as Gehring plated Peace with the sacrifice fly to left field.  

Nova Southeastern was limited to four hits.  

The Tars are back on their home field Saturday February 15 against Nova Southeastern four a doubleheader.
