Tars Finish Sixth at SSC Championship

CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 24, 2019) – Freshman Sydney Willis enjoyed a big final day of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Championship for the Tars leading Rollins to a sixth place finish.

Rollins earned 310 points, 30 more than Florida Tech and just 25 away from fifth place Saint Leo. Tampa won the team title, followed by Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern.

Willis started the Tars finals with a sixth place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, posting a school record time of 17:12.58. Makenzie Grider was seventh in 17:19.39 and Grace Hansen took 16th with a time of 18:05.34.

Willis teamed with Maya Thompson, Anna Van Zyverden and Beatriz Olivieri to finish fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay and set a new school record in 3:29.44. The previous mark of 3:30.71 was set last year by Thompson, Macy Trattner, Hannah Brockman and Taylor Wilks.

Thompson finished 15th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.36 and Jaimie Mans took 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.60.

Those Tars with NCAA B cuts will next wait and for the selection show on Wednesday, February 27.
