PREVIEW: Tars Welcome Mocs and Spartans for Weekend Slate

Rollins Wraps Up Three Match Home Stretch with Weekend Series

SET UP:

After winning their second straight contest with a 3-0 sweep of Embry-Riddle on Tuesday evening in Warden Arena, the Rollins volleyball team is set to wrap up a three match home stretch with a Friday night showdown against Florida Southern, and a Saturday afternoon matinee against the University of Tampa.  Fans who are unable to attend the matches this week will be able to follow all of the action with free video on the Tars Sports Network, as well as live stats on TarsStats.com.

SPECIAL NOTE:

The Rollins volleyball team will be accepting donations this week for the "I-4 for Puerto Rico" hurricane relief drive.  The Tars will be accepting supplies at all three of their home matches this week, beginning with their 7 p.m. Sunshine State Conference showdown with Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, September 26.  For more information on relief items that are needed, as well as the "I-4 for Puerto Rico" relief drive efforts, visit RollinsSports.com.

WHO TO WATCH:

Rollins:

The Tars swept the Embry-Riddle Eagles for the second time in program history on Tuesday night, winning their second straight and advancing to a record of 3-6 and 2-3 in Sunshine State Conference standings.  Rollins is led in kills by Bri Civiero and Shannon McDonough with 120 apiece, with each averaging 3.75 kills per set.  Cassidy Cason has earned 327 assists, averaging 10.22 per set. Rachel Fletcher leads the team in digs with 112, averaging 3.5 per set, followed by McDonough with 85, and Civiero with 84.  Cason and Jaime Becker follow close behind with 79 and 69 digs, respectively.  Leading the team in total blocks entering into Tuesday night's match is Mary Bethany Vincent with 26 on the year, but Kerra Tirado leads the Tars in solo blocks with six in 25 sets played.

Florida Southern:

Eleven matches into the season, the Florida Southern Moccasins enter into Friday night's matchup with a record of 6-5 and 3-0 in the SSC.  The Mocs are riding a three match win streak, having most recently taken down Tampa in five sets, and Lynn and Eckerd in straight sets.  Nicole Mattson and Anna Tovo lead the team in kills with 166 and 136, respectively, with Mattson averaging 3.86 kills per set, and Tovo averaging 3.16.  Bethany Bescancenez has earned the duties of primary setter, and has amassed 472 assists on the year, averaging 10.98 per set.  Gabby Fresh leads the team in digs with 168, followed by Tovo with 130 and Mattson with 106.  At the net, Allie Geary has posted up 33 total blocks in 43 sets played, leading the team with 28 assisted blocks.  Sydney Marshall leads the team in solo blocks with seven in 38 total sets played.

Tampa:

The Spartans will take on fourth-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic before swinging through Winter Park on Saturday afternoon to square off against the Tars.  With 11 matches completed so far this season, Tampa sits 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the SSC.  Their last match out, the Spartans fell in straight sets to No. 20 Saint Leo on Tuesday night on their home court.  With 36 sets played, the Spartans are led by Nicole Dominguez with 90 kills, followed by Nylah Demps with 81.  Dominguez is averaging 2.5 kills per set, while Demps averages 2.25.  Sammy Mueller leads the team in assists with 131, and is followed closely by Jen Aprile with 128, while Melissa Elias trails with 111.  Dominguez also leads the team in digs with 97, followed by Kasey Reynolds with 69 and Aprile with 59.  Courtney Vogler leads Tampa in blocks, with 33 total so far this season, posting a team best 30 assisted blocks.  Dominguez leads the team in solo blocks with five, followed by Demps with four.

NOTES:

  • Rollins and Florida Southern have matched up 95 times since their first meeting on October 13, 1976.  The Mocs lead the series, 87-8, with their last matchup occurring on Saturday, November 12, where Florida Southern defeated the Tars 3-1 in Lakeland.
  • The Tars and Spartans have squared off on the court 92 times since their first meeting on November 12, 1977.  Tampa leads the overall series, 87-5, with their last matchup occurring on October 28, 2016, where the Spartans swept Rollins in Warden Arena.
  • Both McDonough and Cason have posted three straight matches with double-doubles, while Civiero has earned three on the season so far.

NEXT:

The Rollins volleyball team returns to action on Friday, October 6, when they travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to take on Barry University in a 7 p.m. matchup.  The Tars will close out their weekend road trip with a 4 p.m. showdown against Nova Southeastern in Ft.
