SETUP
After opening up Sunshine State Conference play with a
hard-fought five-set victory over Florida Tech on the road last
Friday night, the Tars closed out the weekend with a 3-1 loss to a
well-rested Embry-Riddle squad on Saturday in Warden Arena,
snapping a seven-match win streak. The Tars look to get back to
their winning ways as they take to the road to face Saint Leo, who
received votes on the latest AVCA DII Coaches Poll, in a Friday
night SSC matchup, followed by a Saturday matinee at No. 19
Tampa.
Both Saint Leo and Tampa have a record of 1-1 in conference
play, with the Lions holding onto a 6-4 overall record, and the
Spartans enter into a Friday night match against Embry-Riddle with
a mark of 6-3 before taking on the Tars on Saturday.
WHO TO WATCH:
Rollins: Earning her sixth double-double of the
season, Shannon
McDonough continues to perform for the Tars. The Junior has now
recorded 178 kills, and currently leads the Sunshine State
Conference in kills per sets, which she sits at an average of
4.81. Outside Hitter Bri
Civiero, continues to ride the heels of McDonough in kills with
155. Newcomer Cassidy
Cason leads the Tars and sits second in conference with 418
assists. MaryBethany
Vincent still leads the team in total blocks with 28, while Sam
Schlesman is right behind her with 25. Rebecca
Wilson holds the team lead for digs with 182 on the season.
Head Coach Mika
Robinson took over the Tars program in February and
has aligned Rollins for success this season. She was head coach at
Berry College the past eight seasons, amassing a record of 169-88
with three conference championships and to NCAA Division III
Tournament berths.
Saint Leo: SSC Defensive player of the week,
Jamee Townsend leads her team with a total of185 digs. In first
place in the conference, Townsend has earned an average of 5.37
digs per set. Senior Hope Lemon leads the Lions in kills with a 133
on the season. Lemon is currently averaging 4.15 per set. Anna
Garret has recorded 352 assists so far in her first season as a
Lion. At the net, Dallas Jasper leads the team with 18 total
blocks.
Head Coach Sam Cibrone is in his 12th season with the
Lions. Last season Cibrone was named SSC Co-Coach of the year and
led his team to their third-straight NCAA appearance. He is
currently en route to becoming the winningest coach in Saint Leo
Volleyball history.
Tampa: The University of Tampa senior Allee
Stelogeannis leads the Spartans with 158 kills on the season.
Stelogeannis sits second in the Sunshine State Conference in kills
per set with an average of 4.65. Behind Stelogeannis, is Katie
Mckiel who has recorded 101 kills on the season. Sophomore
Alexandra Misca leads the conference with a hitting percentage of
.389, and has 23 total blocks for the Spartans. Jen Aprile has now
posted 204 assists leading the team in that area, while Logan
Holanchock leads the team with 141 digs.
Head Coach Chris Catanach is in his 33rd season with
the Spartan volleyball program. During the 2015 season, Catanach
led his team to a 25th Sunshine State Conference
Championship and 30th trip to the postseason. Over his
coaching career he has earned a record of 999-173.
NOTES:
The Tars saw their seven-game win streak snapped on Saturday
against a well-rested Embry-Riddle squad. Rollins enters into
Friday night's showdown against Saint Leo with an overall record of
7-3, and 1-0 in the SSC.
Saint Leo, who received votes on the latest AVCA Division II
Coaches Poll, enters into Friday's match with a record of 6-4 and
1-1 in the SSC. After dropping a 3-1 decision to then No. 22
Florida Southern last Friday, the Lions bounced back and took down
then No. 16 Tampa by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in
the Martinez Center. It marked just the second time in program
history that the Lions have defeated the Spartans.
Tampa will enter into Saturday afternoon's matchup after taking
on Embry-Riddle on Friday evening. The Spartans, who sit with a
record of 6-3 and 1-1 in the SSC, most recently dropped a 3-1 match
to Saint Leo at home, marking just the second time in program
history that the Spartans have lost to the Lions.

After this weekend's SSC road tilt, the Tars return home on
Friday, September 30 when they host Nova Southeastern in conference
action. Rollins will wrap up their weekend on Saturday, October 1,
when they host Palm Beach Atlantic in a 4 pm matchup. Both games
