TAMPA, Fla. (September 24, 2016) - Squaring up against their third nationally-ranked program this season, the Rollins volleyball team found themselves unable to overcome a tough Tampa squad that checked in at No. 19 on the latest AVCA Division II Coaches Poll this past week. The Tars, who took to the court after a hard-fought five-setter the night before, dropped to the Spartans by a final score of 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon in the Martinez Center on the campus of University of Tampa. With the loss, the Tars drop to 7-5 and 1-2 against Sunshine State Conference opponents, while the Spartans advance to 8-3, and 2-1 in SSC play.

Shannon McDonough led the team in kills on the afternoon with 12 as she fired off a total of 23 total attacks with only five errors for a .304 hitting percentage. McDonough was followed by Sam Schlesman and Rachel Fletcher with seven kills each, with Schlesman walking away with 17 total attacks and just one error for a .353 hitting percentage. Cassidy Cason and Gina Cappetta split setting duties on the day, with Cason leading the team with 18 assists, and Cappetta dishing out 15. Defensively, Rebecca Wilson led the team with 14 digs, while MaryBethany Vincent earned a team high two blocks.

The Spartans were led in scoring by Allee Stelogeannis and Nicole Dominguez with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as both hit .417 on the afternoon. Stelogeannis picked up the matches lone double-double as she added a team best 10 digs, while Taylor Fosler earned a team high two blocks, including the matches lone solo block.

NOTES:

  • Rollins has lost only three matches this season by a score of 3-0, all of which were to nationally-ranked opponents.

  • McDonough rattled off her 10th straight match with a double-digit kill count.

  • Rollins out-blocked Tampa, 3.0 - 2.0.

  • Throughout the five sets, the score was tied 21 times, including 10 times in Set 2, and nine times in Set 3.

  • The lead changed hands throughout the match on 11 occasions, with 10 changes over the final two sets. Set 2 saw a total of four lead changes, while Set 3 saw the lead change hands six times.

COACH ROBINSON'S THOUGHTS:

"We had a solid offensive performance, particularly in sets 1 and 2, but Tampa did a great job of keeping us on our heels defensively. We know that the conference season is a long one, and we are looking forward to continuing to work towards peaking at the end of the season."
