TAMPA, Fla. (September 24, 2016) - Squaring up
against their third nationally-ranked program this season, the
Rollins volleyball team found themselves unable to overcome a tough
Tampa squad that checked in at No. 19 on the latest AVCA Division
II Coaches Poll this past week. The Tars, who took to the court
after a hard-fought five-setter the night before, dropped to the
Spartans by a final score of 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 19-25) on Saturday
afternoon in the Martinez Center on the campus of University of
Tampa. With the loss, the Tars drop to 7-5 and 1-2 against
Sunshine State Conference opponents, while the Spartans advance to
8-3, and 2-1 in SSC play.
Shannon
McDonough led the team in kills on the afternoon with 12 as she
fired off a total of 23 total attacks with only five errors for a
.304 hitting percentage. McDonough was followed by Sam
Schlesman and Rachel
Fletcher with seven kills each, with Schlesman walking away
with 17 total attacks and just one error for a .353 hitting
percentage. Cassidy
Cason and Gina
Cappetta split setting duties on the day, with Cason leading
the team with 18 assists, and Cappetta dishing out 15.
Defensively, Rebecca
Wilson led the team with 14 digs, while MaryBethany
Vincent earned a team high two blocks.
The Spartans were led in scoring by Allee Stelogeannis and
Nicole Dominguez with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as both hit
.417 on the afternoon. Sammy Mueller led the Spartans in assists
with 20, followed by Jen Aprile with 13. Stelogeannis picked up
the matches lone double-double as she added a team best 10 digs,
while Taylor Fosler earned a team high two blocks, including the
matches lone solo block.
NOTES:

Rollins has lost only three matches this season by a score of
3-0, all of which were to nationally-ranked opponents.

McDonough rattled off her 10th straight match with a
double-digit kill count.

Rollins out-blocked Tampa, 3.0 - 2.0.

Throughout the five sets, the score was tied 21 times, including
10 times in Set 2, and nine times in Set 3.

The lead changed hands throughout the match on 11 occasions,
with 10 changes over the final two sets. Set 2 saw a total of four
lead changes, while Set 3 saw the lead change hands six times.
COACH ROBINSON'S THOUGHTS:
"We had a solid offensive performance, particularly in sets 1
and 2, but Tampa did a great job of keeping us on our heels
defensively. We know that the conference season is a long one, and
we are looking forward to continuing to work towards peaking at the
end of the season."
