WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 4, 2015) - Nothing explains a win better than teamwork as the Rollins volleyball team opened up its 2015 campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-23) win over the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm in the 2015 Rollins Invitational. The Tars open the season with a mark of 1-0, while the Savage Storm opens their season with a mark of 0-2 after day one of the Invitational.

Sophomore Bri Civiero led Rollins in kills with 12. The outside hitter from Mount Dora, Fla. Added one assist, eight digs, and two blocks to her afternoon.

Hitting on point were junior Kate Stefanski and sophomore Kianna Dieudonne, who notched hitting percentages of .500 and .615, respectively. Stefanski added a dig and two blocks while Dieudonne tacked on four blocks to her afternoon.

Freshman Rachel Sawyer kicked off her collegiate career on a high note with nine kills on the day, notching a service ace, nine digs, and one block.

Setters April Jackson and MaryEllen Pole shared the limelight tallying 20 and 10 assists respectively. Libero Rebecca Wilson posted 14 digs while adding one kill on a service ace.

Firing on all cylinders from the start, Rollins opened the frame in charge and never relinquished the lead throughout the first set that saw the score tied only once during the opening points. The Tars cruised through set one to win the frame 25-17 as they hit .486 as a team and holding the Savage Storm to a hitting percentage of .267.

Southeastern Oklahoma fought back in the second set, posting a hitting percentage of .238 while holding the Tars to .136. The second stanza saw the score tied eight times with four lead changes as both teams battled for the set. The Savage Storm pulled to within one late in the set, with Rollins holding onto a slim 23-22 lead, but the Tars were able to capitalize on two quick errors by SOSU to take the second set, 25-22.

The third set was much like the second, with two lead changes and the score tied six times. Rollins hit .105 as a team, but held the Savage Storm to a .000 hitting percentage en route to a 25-23 final set score. The Tars led by as much as three late in the game with a score of 23-20, but once again the Savage Storm fought back to pull to within one, 24-23. Unlike set two, the Tars ended the final frame on a strong note, sealing the deal with a kill by Civiero off of an assist by Jackson.

The season opening Rollins Invitational will continue for the Tars as they take to the court in the final match of day one, squaring off against the Northern State Wolves.
