Tars Fall 7-3 to Eckerd in SSC Opener

WINTER PARK, Fla.. (Feb. 20, 2015) - Blake Hutton and Grant Ashline each went 2-for-4 but Rollins (5-5, 0-1) fell 7-3 in the Sunshine State Conference opener to the Eckerd Tritons (6-2, 1-0).

The Tars fall to 5-5 and 0-1 in conference play. Junior pitcher Matt Hendricks suffers the loss and is now 2-2 on the season. Hendricks pitched 6.0 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. Brandon Burgess, Seth Brenner and Brett Scafidi pitched in relief as Burgess allowed the remaining three runs.

Senior right fielder Zach Persky returned to the Rollins lineup and had a triple, walk and rbi. Christian Coburn, Peter Nicoletto, Philip Burket, Mike Purcell and Skip Kovar each added a hit for the Tars.

In the first at-bat of the game Lucas Lupoa hit a solo home run to give Eckerd the 1-0 lead.

Rollins answered in the bottom of the third as Coburn singled in Ashline to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the fourth inning, MacMahon hit a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Cashman to increase the Tritons lead to 2-1.

Peter Nicoletto led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double bringing Purcell to the plate. Purcell singled in Nicoletto to tie the game at 2-2.

Eckerd scored twice in the top of the fifth off three hits to increase their lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ashline gave the Tars life with an infield hit. Two batters later Persky tripled to right center scoring Ashline as Rollins trailed 4-3.

The Tritons scored three more in the top of the eighth on three hits as Rollins fell 7-3 Friday evening.

The Tars left eight men on base, while Eckerd left eight men on base.

The Tars continue the series against Eckerd Saturday at 1 p.m.
