LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 18, 2015)
- The 16th-ranked Tars were in
the game early and made a late push, but turnovers and a poor
shooting night cost Rollins as they fell to the seventh ranked
Tarleton State Texans, 73-51, in the first game of the South Point
Holiday Classic.
The Tars fall to 9-2 overall while Tarleton State improves to
9-1.
Rollins shot 16-46 (34.8%) from the field and hit just 25
percent from beyond the arc as a team. The Texans shot 44.1 percent
for the game but went just 5-22 from the three point arc. Rollins'
usual go to, the free throw line, didn't help them, as they only
shot 60.9 percent, compared to their NCAA leading 86.2%. Tarleton
State also outrebounded the Tars 44-30.
Sam
Philpott led the Tars with 13 points and five rebounds while Mike
Bedulskis and Jeff
Merton each chipped in eight. James
Ferrell also added four points and a game high five assists to
the effort.
For Tarleton State, Michael Hardge led all scorers with 21
points, 12 of those coming in the first half, on 6-11 shooting to
go along with four steals. Charles Hill had 18 points and three
steals while EJ Reed added 11 points and 10 boards.
The first half started in a tight contest, with both the Texans
and Tars trading baskets. Rollins held their only lead of the game,
11-9, at the 13:47 mark.
Both teams continued to trade baskets until the 8:50 minute
mark, when Tarleton State began a 19-6 run to end the first half to
take a 37-21 lead heading into the halftime break.
Tarleton State began the second half with purpose, opening up a
17 point lead only five minutes into the period.
Rollins would try to keep the game from getting out of reach,
limiting the damage as much as they could but Merton picked up his
fifth foul with ten minutes go in the half and was forced to sit
for the rest of the game.
The Tars tried to compensate with one of their offensive threats
on the bench, scoring five points to bring it to a 15-point game
with 7:12 remaining in the half.
Rollins then cut it as close as 13 after a pair of Eric
Castaneda free throws, but a late run by the Tarleton State
bench players put the finishing touches on the game.
The Tars will be right back to it tomorrow, Dec. 19 in the
second game of the South Point Holiday Classic. Rollins will play
Angelo State at 2 p.m. EST. Fans can listen to all the action live
