WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2014) - Rollins
Head Coach Jon
Sjogren recorded his 600th career victory on
Thursday night as the Tars defeated the University of the Sciences
13-0 during the 66th Annual Rollins College Baseball
Week tournament.
In over 23 years of coaching, Sjogren has now amassed a record
of 600-507-4. The Tars' skipper previously coached at Bryant
University where he spent 15 years at the helm.
Rollins now improves to 9-7 overall, while the University of the
Sciences fall to 1-7.
The Tars recorded 16 total hits with all nine starting players
registering at least one hit. Christian
Coburn led the team with three hits, while five Tars posted two
hits. Coburn also matched a season-best three runs.
Southpaw Jack
Murray (2-1) earned his second win of the season in 5.0 innings
of action. Murray struck out a career-best eight batters and did
not allow a walk, but scattered two hits.
Murray's counterpart, Paul Vento, was saddled with the loss in
1.0 inning on the bump. Vento gave up nine runs on nine hits and
failed to record a strikeout.
The Tars quickly jumped on the board in the opening frame as
they plated four runs. After leading off the game with a base hit,
Coburn rounded the bases on a single, a stolen base and scored on a
throwing error the Devils catcher.
Brett
Flutie scored the next run on a Matt
Hendricks RBI single. Hendricks would then come around to
score on a Yuta
Okazaki grounder to second. Lucas
Valelly plated the final run of the frame on a Mike
Purcell grounder to first.
The Tars breakout inning came in the bottom second as the team
battered around with half the lineup batting once again.
Rollins notched five straight hits, including a two-run home run
by Lucas
Valelly, his first collegiate homer.
The Tars scored their final run of the game in the fourth as
Coburn crossed the dish for the third time.
Rollins will next face the Saint Anselm Hawks Friday at 6
p.m.
