FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (September 6, 2013) -
Nothing explains a win better than teamwork as the Rollins
volleyball team opened up the 2013 season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13,
25-14) win over the Barton College Bulldogs at the 7th
Annual Shark Classic.
Returning senior and All-American Camille Indest led Rollins as
she registered eight kills with a .538 hitting percentage, along
with four blocks, two digs, one service ace and one assist. Junior
Jessica Wilson had nine kills with six digs and four blocks.
Setters April Jackson and MaryEllen Pole shared the limelight
tallying 16 and 10 assists respectively. Libero Kelly Merideth
posted 12 digs with one assist.
Looking strong in their collegiate debut were freshmen Katlyn
Sawyer and Ruth Harrington. Sawyer finished with seven kills for a
.538 hitting percentage with four blocks while Harrington posted
six kills, seven digs and two assists.
A bit sluggish out of the gates, Rollins slowly fell into motion
in the opening frame as the set saw seven ties and five lead
changes. The Tars were finally able to gain some momentum after a
serving error by the Bulldogs. Rollins scored the final nine
points to win the first set 25-19.
Rollins dominated from the get-go in the second set, hitting
.538 as a team and holding Barton to a .000 hitting percentage.
Indest recorded four of her kills in the second set as did Wilson
with five.
The final set was a close one with five ties but no lead
changes. After an attack error by the Tars evened the score at
nine points apiece, Rollins bounced right back with a kill from
Harrington that led the way to a 25-14 win to end the match.
The season opening Shark Classic will continue for the Tars at
4:30 p.m. as they face the Virginia State Trojans. Follow the Tars
