Tars Put Out the Fire, Defeat Blazers 3-2

TAMPA, Fla. (October 19, 2012) - The Rollins volleyball team fought back from being down two sets to win in the fifth 15-6 against the Valdosta State Blazers Friday morning at the 2012 Red Elephant Café South Region Crossover hosted by the University of Tampa. Set scores for the opening match were 25-27, 26-28, 25-11, 25-18, 15-6.

The Tars now improve to 12-9 on the season while Valdosta State falls to 12-9. The last time the two met was in 2010 when the Tars and Blazers took it to five with Rollins taking the final set 15-13.

Rollins was led by junior Camille Indest as she registered a career-high 23 kills with a .556 hitting percentage. She also recorded three digs and blocked one ball at the net. Megan Hodges added 20 kills while Kelly Merideth posted her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 16 digs, to go along with a season-high four blocks.

Freshman setter April Jackson added 51 assists while Christina Carracino had 21 digs, defensively.

Rollins struggled to maintain a lead in the first two sets as they went down 27-25 and 28-26. After taking a 25-24 lead on a kill by Hodges in the first set, the Blazers scored three straight points to close the set. In the second frame, the Tars took a 26-25 lead on a block by April Jackson and Jessica Wilson but were unable to build from the momentum as Valdosta State's Nikki McDaniel registered three straight kills to close the set.

The Tars were able to bounce back in the third set recording a score of 25-11. Rollins hit .520 for the set and was led by Indest with five kills. The Tars led by as many as 14 at the 23-9 mark on a kill by Indest and posted the win on a defensive miscue by VSU.

After bouncing back in the third set, the Tars carried their momentum over in the fourth and fifth sets, recording scores of 25-18 and 15-6. The Tars' win over Valdosta State marks the first match this season that Rollins makes a comeback from being down 0-2.

Valdosta State was led by Nikki McDaniel with 18 kills and 13 digs.

The Tars will take on the West Georgia Wolves in their second match of the day at the 2012 Red Elephant Café South Region Crossover. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
