SAVANNAH, Ga. (September 16, 2011) - The
24th-ranked Tars volleyball team ended their four-game
losing skid as they swept the No. 21 North Alabama Lions in
straight sets (29-27, 25-15, 25-16) in the opening match of the
2011 Pirate South/Southeast Challenge.
Rollins now improves to 6-4 on the season; while North Alabama
suffers their first loss of the season for a 7-1 overall mark.
For the match, the Tars hit above a .300 for the fifth time this
season, while holding UNA to a .194 hitting percentage. Rollins
outdid their opponent in kills, assists, service aces, digs, and
blocks. The Tars were also error-free in the final set, hitting
.682. Of the six starters, five hit .400.
Sophomore Megan Hodges continues to lead the Tars offense as she
collected 15 kills and was a dig shy of a double-double with nine.
Collyn Welsch tallied nine kills and nine digs, as Kelly Merideth
added eight kills, eight digs, and two blocks.
After five ties and three lead changes in game one, a kill by
Welsch evened things up at 27-all. A kill by Jill Lau and a
service ace secured the game one win for Rollins.
Games two and three were won with ease taking the second by a
score of 25-15 and the third 25-16.
The 21st-ranked Lions were one of two ranked
opponents the Tars face this weekend.
