SAVANNAH, Ga. (September 16, 2011) - The No. 24
Rollins volleyball team suffered a straight set loss (18-25, 26-28,
23-25) to the Flagler Saints in Friday's night cap of the 2011
Pirate South/Southeast Challenge.
The loss set back the Tars to 6-5 on the season, while the
Flagler Saints improved to 7-2. The straight set loss was the
first sweep the Tars have endured this season.
Sophomore Megan Hodges collected 19 kills and was a dig shy of a
double-double with nine digs, to go along with one block and a pair
of service aces. Collyn Welsch chipped in with seven kills and 13
digs, while Kiana Parks picked up her first double-double of the
season with 25 assists and 10 digs.
After picking up a win earlier in the day, the Tars were a bit
sluggish out of the gates dropping the first set 25-18. In game
two, the 24th-ranked Tars were a bit more alert as the
set saw 13 ties and four lead changes. Collyn Welsch kept the Tars
alive after tying the score at 25-all and then giving the team a
one-point edge on a kill. The Saints were able to capitalize on
some Tars defensive miscues to take game two, 28-26.
Down by two games, Rollins remained competitive with Flagler
throughout the set as the set saw another 20 ties and eight lead
changes. The Tars led by no more than two points throughout and
struggled to extend their lead. On a kill by Jill Lau, Rollins
managed to hold a 22-21 lead over the Saints, but like it roll by
as the Saints look the final set 25-23.
Flagler outhit the Tars .273-.197 and had four Saints tally
double-digit kills with Emilee Taylor leading with 12. Sophie
Meyer added 11 kills, while Rachel Stacy and Crystal Niederriter
each recorded 10 apiece.
Rollins will wrap up the 2011 Pirate South/Southeast Challenge
Saturday as they take on USC-Aiken at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m.
matchup against the No. 23 Armstrong Atlantic Pirates. Fans can
