WEST CHESTER, Pa. (April 23, 2011) - The
ninth-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team tested the sixth-ranked
West Chester University Golden Rams, but fell to their south region
foe 15-11 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Tars drop to
an overall record of 11-4, while West Chester advances to 14-3 on
the season.
Leading the Tars in their key south region showdown were Erica
Pagliarulo, Sarah
Ann Showell, and Anna
Townsend with two goals apiece on the afternoon. Marissa
Giannerini, Sophie
Townsend, Tori
Snow, Caroline
Lamere, and Cat
Kelley scored one each, with Katie

De Lisle posted a big second half, setting aside six shots and
completing the afternoon with a total of nine saves, besting her
counterpart MacKenzie O'Keefe by one.
West Chester saw a five goal performance from Jackie Hoover,
while Shannon Hayes posted a five-point afternoon with three goals
and two assists.
The Golden Rams opened up to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to two
goals from Hayes in just a little over a minute of action, but
Giannerini cut the deficit in half on a free position shot with
25:16 on the clock to set the score at 2-1.
Tyszko connected on a pass to Anna
Townsend less than a minute later to knot the score at 2-2, but
Erin Oczkowski put WCU back into a one goal lead with 23:59 before
the half. Hoover extended the lead to 4-2 on an unassisted shot a
minute later, but Lamere answered back with an assist from Palasz
to set the score at 4-3 with 21:40 on the clock.
Both teams traded blows throughout the ensuing minutes, going
goal for goal with West Chester holding a slim 8-7 lead with 10:43
to go before the break. Despite the Tars' best defensive efforts,
Hoover ignited a five-goal Golden Ram sprint, giving them a 13-7
advantage with just 1:37 remaining before halftime.
Rollins netted two late goals thanks to Sophie
Townsend who netted a shot with 20 seconds on the clock, and
Pagliarulo who ran a draw control through the eight meter for a
shot past O'Keefe with just eight ticks remaining before the half
to pull the Tars back to 13-9 at the break.
Rollins scored the first goal out of the break thanks to a free
position goal from Kelley, but it wasn't enough to spark a second
half comeback as both teams netted two goals apiece throughout the
final stanza.
The Tars led the shot count 30-28, but WCU came up 17 ground
balls while Rollins came up with 10. The Tars were hot on
free-position shots, making good on 4-of-7 from the hash marks.
The Golden Rams were whistled for 30 fouls in comparison to
Rollins' 26, and committed more turnovers as they led the count
15-13 thanks to six caused turnovers by the Tars.
