WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2011) - Rollins
opened up the 63rd Annual Rollins College Baseball Week
against the Maine Bears, as the visiting team, and suffered a 5-4
loss Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium. Rollins also hosted the
Third Annual Baseball for a Cure with all proceeds benefiting the
American Cancer Society.
Kevin Mager, John Avanzino, and Sean Reilly each notched a pair
of hits along with an RBI against the Bears with Avanzino picking
up his eighth double of the season.
Quick to jump on the board, Rollins scored a pair of runs in the
opening frame. Zach Persky was first to cross the plate for the
Tars as the freshman right fielder scored on a Kevin Mager RBI
single. Tony Brunetti followed scoring on a bases loaded single by
John Avanzino, who later scored in the top of the third on a single
by Sean Reilly.
With Rollins leading 3-1 in the top of the third, the Maine
Bears knotted up the score in the bottom half of the inning with
Michael Fransoso scoring the first run and Fran Whitten blasting a
two-run homer over the right field wall.
In the top of the fifth, Tony Brunetti scored his second run of
the contest to give the Tars a 4-3 lead over the Bears. Maine then
evened the score once again after playing three scoreless innings
of baseball. The Bears scored in the bottom of the seventh on a
Cori Warren wild pitch.
Rollins, unable to score in the final two innings of play, gave
up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth on a one out double
scoring Colin Gray from second.
In 2 2/3 innings of work, Cori Warren took the loss for the
Tars, while Maine closer D.J. Voisine earned the win with two
innings pitched. Voisine gave up one hit and walked one.
Prior to the evening's contest, the life of longtime and beloved
groundskeeper Winston Short was honored with a short presentation
and the release of 100 balloons.
Rollins will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Tars
take on the Georgetown Hoyas at 6 p.m. in game five of Baseball
Week. For live action of the Tars, check out the Tars Sports
