WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2011) - Closer Matt
White kept Georgetown scoreless in the final three innings of play,
while Chris Holloway and Kevin Mager scored the go-ahead runs in
the bottom of the eighth to capture Rollins' first win of the
63rd Annual Rollins College Baseball Week with the Tars
defeating the Georgetown Hoyas 10-8 Monday night at Alfond
Stadium.
With the win, Rollins improves to 12-5 on the season and are 1-1
for Baseball Week.
Pitching 2 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball, Matt White (2-0)
picked up his second win of the season, to go along with a
season-high six strikeouts. White faced nine batters and gave up
no walks.
Rollins scored multiple runs in three frames with a pair of runs
in the third and sixth, along with a four-run fifth. The Tars' 14
hits was the second consecutive game in double-figures and
10th on the season.
At the end of five innings, Rollins held a 6-2 lead over the
Hoyas, but starting pitcher Mike Herrmann and Alex Venegas combined
gave up six runs in the sixth to put Georgetown up8-6. Rollins
then took back two runs to tie the score in the home half of the
inning on a one-out bases clearing double by Max Pavy driving in
Chris Holloway and Steve Betcherman.
Betcherman notched a career-high four hits against the Hoyas, to
go along with two runs and a double. Pavy had a stellar night as
he finished 2-for-4 with a season-high four RBIs, to go with a
double, and a run scored.
Taking the mound in the top of the seventh, Matt White kept
Georgetown scoreless and gave up his one hit in the top of the
ninth. White struck out the side for the second time this season
in the eighth.
Chris Holloway, who scored the go-ahead run in the eighth,
reached first safely on a single up the middle and scored on a
Kevin Mager infield hit. Mager then made his way to home plate on
a John Avanzino RBI single.
Mager notched two hits against the Hoyas with three RBIs, two
runs, and a double.
Georgetown closer Neal Dennison (0-1) took the loss in one
inning of work.
Rollins will take to the field tomorrow afternoon as the Tars
host the Penn Quakers. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. For live
