WINTER PARK, Fla. (NOVEMBER 4, 2011) - The
Rollins Tars volleyball team took down the Lynn Fighting Knights in
four (25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18) Friday night at Warden Arena.
It was a total team effort as four Tars tallied double-figure
kills. Megan Hodges and Jessica Wilson paced the Tars with 12
kills each, with Wilson recording a season-high eight blocks.
Kelly Merideth and Collyn Welsch added 10 kills apiece, as Welsch
picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 15 digs.
Defensively, senior Phoebe Corder led with 16 digs, while Kiana
Parks added six blocks, to go along with six digs and 45
assists.
Rollins started off strong in the opening frame as they jumped
out to a 6-2 lead over the Knights. Lynn then answered back as
they scored four of the next five points to come within one, 7-6.
After four ties in the set, the Tars gained some momentum,
extending their lead to keep the Fighting Knights at bay. Rollins
took the first set 25-19.
In the second set, Lynn came out of the gates strong as they
remained ahead of the Tars. Rollins managed to tie the score at
10-all on a kill by Wilson, but were unable to keep things going
for them. Lynn took the second frame 25-19. LU hit .485 in the
second set going 18-for-33 with two errors, while Rollins was
14-for-33 with four errors (.303).
The Tars managed to keep the momentum flowing through the final
two sets, taking the third 25-21 and the fourth set 25-18.
In the third set, Rollins saw themselves trailing early on, but
went on a 4-1 run to even things at 7-7 on block assist by Wilson
and Parks. The score tied on three more occasions before the Tars
were able to hold onto the lead, as Rollins went on a 6-1 run to
lead 16-11. After a Lynn timeout, the Fighting Knights rallied to
come within one at the 20-19 mark, but were unable to overcome the
deficit.
Not wanting to fall in four, the Fighting Knights played
point-for-point with the Tars. Rollins pulled ahead on a 7-1 run
to lead 13-8 and never looked back. The Tars scored six of the
last 10 points, taking the match on a kill by Hodges.
Lynn's Brianna Cox led the Fighting Knights with 13 kills, while
Lizzy Raffa added 12 kills and Shannon Dugan 10.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 5 for Senior Night
as the Tars play host to the Barry Buccaneers. First serve is set
