Boca Raton, Fla. (September 3, 2010) - With
much anticipation for the start of the 2010 season, the Tars
volleyball program fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25) to the
Lewis Flyers this Friday (Sept. 3) morning at the de Hoernle
Center.
After leading for the most part of the first set, momentum
shifted late in the set after a kill by Lewis' Danielle Mount tied
the score at 18. A kill by senior Sarah
Mendoza would put the Tars back by one, 21-20, but an attack
error by Megan
Hodges would turn the tables for the Tars once again. Camille
Indest scored the final point in the first set as Lewis took
the first 25-21.
Coming out of the gates fierce, the Tars held a three-point
advantage (5-2) over the Flyers in the second set on a service ace
by Indest. After the score tied at 13 on a service error by Lewis,
Rollins took hold of the set scoring five consecutive points to
lead by four. Hodges sealed the second set on back-to-back
kills.
Off to a slow start in the third, the Tars faced a nine-point
deficit with Lewis leading 21-12. A kill by Jill
Lau would give the Tars a boost of confidence as Rollins went
on a 9-2 run to trail by two, but fell short as Lewis took the
third set by a score of 25-21.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, the fourth set for the Tars seemed
much like the rest with Rollins trailing late in the set. After
scoring three consecutive points to lead by one, 19-18, Lewis would
tie the score and close out the set on a 7-1 run to take the set
25-20 and the match.
Sarah
Mendoza was a dig shy of a double-double with 20 kills and nine
digs for a .327 hitting percentage. Freshman Megan
Hodges finished with her first double-double with 12 kills and
14 digs. Kiana
Parks led the team with 33 assists.
The Tars face California (Pa.) in the fifth match of the
Courtyard by Marriott Classic hosted by Lynn University at 3 p.m.
this Friday (Sept. 3) afternoon.
