WINTER PARK, Fla. -
Sophomore Kevin
Mager ripped a game-winning RBI single through the right side
to help the Rollins baseball team erase a eight-run deficit to
capture a 12-11 victory over Saint Anselm, Wednesday evening in
non-conference action.
With the game tied at 11 and the bases loaded with one out, Mager
was clutch with his third base hit of the contest, second in the
ninth alone, to score shortstop Justin Yount, the winning
run.
Heading into the ninth inning, Rollins trailed the Hawks 11-5.
Mager led off the inning with a single as Ryan Luker advanced on
a walk before a Joey Manning pop up to
first. From that point on Rollins got hot. A Scott
Chase walk preceded Manning's at bat, which allowed catcher Ben
Hewett to hit a two-run RBI single.
Down 11-7, Josh Band reached on a error
by the shortstop before Yount hit a two-run single. Taylor
Ferguson kept the Tars rolling as he ripped an RBI double down
the third base line. The Hawks elected to intentionally walk
Brunetti, a move that proved costly.
Ferguson led Rollins with a 5-for-5 performance and two RBIs.
Mager followed with three hits and two RBIs, while Yount and Hewett
also finished with two RBIs apiece.
Robert Kelly led Saint Anselm with a 2-for-4 effort with a grand
slam and a double. He finished with four RBIs, while Daniel
DeCoste trailed with three.
Starter Danny Clark earned the no
decision for Rollins after tossing 1.1 innings. William Krasne tossed
an effective 5.1 innings. Steven Gropler and Bobby
Coster made appearances, but Chad Giannuzzi (1-0) picked
up the win after going 2.1 shutout innings.
Eric Simm pitched the ninth for the Hawks and suffered the loss
after allowing six runs in the final frame. Matt Stone started the
game, but took a Ferguson shot off his foot, which forced him to
leave the contest in the first. Brett Bartlett pitched the next
5.2 innings allowing five runs, while Mike O'Rourke went two
innings and allowed one run and one hit.
Rollins out-hit Saint Anselm 16-10, while the Hawks stranded 12
runners.
These two teams will square off again, Thursday, March 4 at 6
p.m.
