St. Petersburg, Fla. (October 9, 2010) - After
being down 2-1, the Rollins Tars (11-6, 4-4) rallied from behind to
defeat the Eckerd Tritons 3-2 (25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 17-15)
in a five-set thriller this Saturday afternoon at the McArthur
Center.
Three Tars in double-figure kills led the way for Rollins' first
five-set victory this afternoon. Sarah
Mendoza led Rollins with 25 kills and a .426 hitting
percentage, to go along with a season-high 23 digs and three
blocks. Megan
Hodges notched her fifth double-double with 16 kills and 10
digs. Camille
Indest was a kill shy of tying her season-high with 12 kills
and four blocks.
After taking the first game 25-20, Rollins struggled as they
dropped the second 25-16 and the third 25-23. The Tars then
rallied in the fourth game to win 25-20.
Rollins was outhit .410-.270 in game two, but edged the Tritons
(5-12, 0-8) in the fourth .310-.156 to put them past Eckerd as
Rollins hit .282 overall and Eckerd .202. As a team, the Tars
tallied a season-high 100 digs.
With the match tied at 2-2, a much intense fifth game was ahead
of the Tars as the fifth saw 11 ties and four lead changes. Off to
a smooth start, Rollins led 6-3 before Eckerd managed to come from
behind and take a one point lead (7-6) over the Tars.
The fifth game would see five more ties before Rollins could
secure their first five-set victory of the season. Tied at 15-all,
a costly Eckerd error fell in favor of Rollins to give them the one
point edge over the Tritons forcing an Eckerd timeout. On the next
serve, the Tars managed to put the game away on a kill by Camille
Indest from Kiana
Parks.
"The girls fought back in game five, which is something we've
been struggling with. We've worked on correcting some minor
issues, and it showed today with the 100 digs we completed today,"
said Head Coach Sindee
Snow.
Parks finished with her sixth double-double of the season with
55 assists and tied her career-high of 16 digs. Also posting a
season-high was sophomore Kayla
Austin with 12 digs.
The Tars next step out of conference play as Rollins plays host
to Merrimack College this Sunday, Oct. 10 with first serve slated
