WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 24, 2009) Rollins sprinted to a
nine goal lead in the first 15 minutes of action and didn't look
back as the Tars thumped Southern Connecticut State University 18-3
on Tuesday evening at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur
Field. The Tars advance to 6-2 on the season with the victory,
while the Owls drop their fifth game in a row and sit with an
overall mark of 0-5.
Junior Marissa
Giannerini registered her third game-winning goal on the season
as she led a solid Rollins squad with five goals fired into the
back of the net, including the game-winner with 24 minutes
remaining in the first half.
Behind Giannerini, freshman midfielder Tori
Snow netted three goals of her own to put her at seven on the
season, while sophomore duo Liz
Connelly and Katy
Tyszko placed two apiece between the pipes.
Adding to their overall points on the night, Connelly tallied a
new career and program high with six assists on the night, while
Tyszko added four assists of her own for a total of six points.
The sharpshooting duo both lead the team in overall points with 33
so far this season as Tyszko sits atop the leader board in assists
with 21 and adds 12 goals, and Connelly has 17 goals and 16 assists
in eight games.
Rounding out the goal count on the evening with two goals apiece
were Mallory
Surpless, Lacy
Goodwyn, and Bizzie
Durell, with Surpless assisting on a Goodwyn goal in the second
half to help the Tars to their final 15 goal lead.
Seeing plenty of action for the Owls was junior goalie Lisa
Corso with 17 saves, including 12 in first half action. Facing a
total of 35 shots on goal, Corso did her best to keep SCSU in the
game, but despite her best efforts the Tars held the Owls to one
goal in the first half, and two in the final 30 minutes of
play.
Grace Martha scored the first goal for the Owl's with 13:27
remaining in the first half off of a loose ball in front of the
Rollins cage, and after almost 20 minutes of scoreless activity in
the second half, Teresa Monfredo was finally able to find success
on two goals with assists from Martha and Elaina Heiple.
The Tars dominated in all areas of the field as they outshot
SCSU 44-11 throughout the night. They also took control in the
midfield as they won 14-of-23 draw controls, caused 11 turnovers,
and found success on 25-of-28 clears while Southern Connecticut
only made good on 14-of-29 attempts.
The Rollins women's lacrosse team returns to action for their
final home game of the season on Saturday, March 28 as when they
take on Regis University in an 11 a.m. matchup. After that, the
Tars take to the road for a string of away games to wrap-up the
latter half of their sophomore campaign. For all of the latest
