WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 28, 2009) Sophomore sharpshooter
Liz
Connelly scored four goals and registered four assists for
eight points overall as the Tars defeated a resolute Ranger squad
18-12 on Saturday morning. Rollins (7-2) closes out their home
season and takes to the road for the final half of their sophomore
campaign, while Regis University (Colo.) travels home with an
overall record of 5-2.
Connelly was joined by fellow sophomore Katy
Tyszko who tallied four goals and three assists for seven
points, while junior midfielder Marissa
Giannerini notched seven points as well with seven goals,
including the game-winner with eight minutes remaining in
regulation.
Scoring one goal apiece were Lacy
Goodwyn, Tori
Snow and Bizzie
Durell, with Snow adding two assists to her total, and fellow
freshman Mallory
Surpless notching an assist to help the Tars to their sixth win
at home.
Defensively, the Tars dominated in the midfield winning 63
percent of the draw controls, grabbing 41 ground balls, and causing
13 turnovers. Connelly and Giannerini played a big role in draw
controls as they collected seven and six, respectively, while
Giannerini led the team with eight ground balls. Heading-up the
Tars in caused turnovers was freshman Gabi
Lombardi with three on the day.
The Rangers jumped out to an early one-goal lead with a goal
from Carly Wagner 54 seconds into the contest. The Tars finally
put themselves up on the scoreboard 10 minutes in as Tyszko fired a
free position shot between the pipes to equalize the score at
1-1.
The two teams went back and forth two more times to tie the
score at three with 10:40 to go before the half, and with a one-two
play from Connelly to Giannerini the Tars pulled out to their first
lead of the game with 4-3 on the scoreboard and 3:34 to go before
halftime. Connelly closed-out the half a minute later with an
unassisted goal of her own to allow Rollins to enter into the half
with a score of 5-3.
The Tars exploded into the second half with two goals within
eight seconds from Giannerini in the first minute of action.
Regis' Kate Liddle and Kelsi Goings rallied to score two of their
own before the Tars scored three unanswered tallies to pull out to
a10-5 lead with 21:31 to go in regulation.
Regis pulled back to within four with a goal from Julia Ostberg,
but with a quick connection from Tyszko to Giannerini it appeared
that Rollins was about to go on another scoring streak as they put
a score of 11-6 on the board with 19:42 remaining. However, it was
the Rangers who rallied over the Tars in a ten minute stretch as
they out-scored the Tars 5-1 to pull to within one goal of a
second-half equalizer with 8:52 on the clock.
A quick goal from Gainnerini at the 7:59 mark gave the Tars
their game-winning goal as Rollins went on to out-score the Rangers
6-1 in the final seven minutes of play, closing out their regular
season home game stretch with their third straight win.
The Tars return to action as they hit the road for the second
half of their 2009 slate, taking on first-year program Erskine on
Friday, April 3, in a 4:00 p.m. matchup in Due West, S.C. Two days
later, Rollins takes on St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a
highly anticipated showdown on Sunday, April 5 at noon. To stay up
