WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2009) - The
tenth-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team saw scoring efforts from
five different players as the Tars took on Northeast 10 opponent
Saint Michael's College Monday evening, defeating the Purple
Knights 16-11 on their home turf. With the win, Rollins moves to
4-1, while Saint Michael's drops their second game of the season
and sits at 0-2.
Junior midfielder Marissa
Giannerini led the game in goals with five, while sophomore
fireball Liz
Connelly headed-up the game in overall points with four goals
and two assists for six points on the evening. Fellow sophomore
attacker Katy
Tyszko met Giannerini's five points with a goal and four
assists, helping her climb the ladder to lead the team with 11
assists so far this season.
The freshmen duo of Bizzie
Durell and Mallory
Surpless tallied three goals apiece to help the Tars to their
fourth victory of the season, with Durell adding an assist to her
total. Defensively, freshman midfielder Tori
Snow saw plenty of action as she collected 12 ground balls and
five draw controls. The win pushes Rollins ahead of last year's
overall record of 3-9, making it an ongoing program best as the
team continues to take on their sophomore season.
Last season, the Tars held onto a 12-9 lead at the half, but
Saint Michael's used a huge second-half comeback to edge-out the
Tars 18-17. This time around, Rollins took the reins early in the
game and didn't look back as they entered into the halftime break
6-5, and then outscored the Purple Knights 10-6 in second half
action.
Rollins put themselves up on the board first with a Giannerini
goal off of a free position shot 15 seconds into the contest. But
Saint Michael's bounced back with four unanswered goals over the
following 10 minutes to put them ahead 4-1 with 17:36 remaining in
first half play.
Surpless jump-started a three-goal run for the Tars that ended
with Durell notching the equalizer with 4:01 to go on a free
position shot to even out the score at four. Saint Michael's saw a
score from Amanda Pelley to take a quick lead, but Tyszko and
Durell ended the first half with one goal apiece to put Rollins in
a slim 6-5 lead entering into the break.
Rollins jumped into the second period with a goal from Surpless,
but the Purple Knights fired off two quick tallies of their own
from Lauren Rizzotti to even out the score for the fourth time with
7-7 on the scoreboard. Connelly found two assists from Tyszko to
pull back out to a two point lead, and with another Tyszko assist
to Giannerini with 17:05 on the clock the Tars pulled ahead 10-7.
The Tars sailed through the final 15 minutes outscoring Saint
Michael's 6-4, with the final goal coming from Giannerini with 17
seconds left in the contest.
The tenth-ranked Tars will be back in action when they take on
the eighth-ranked University of New Haven Chargers in a 7:00 p.m.
home contest. Fans can stay up to date on all of the latest
