DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 24, 2008)
The tenth-ranked Rollins women's soccer team kept their undefeated
season in check with a 3-0 victory over Embry-Riddle Wednesday
night on the Eagles' home pitch. The Tars now sit with an overall
record of 7-0-1, and drop the Eagles to an overall mark of
2-3-0.
Play opened up in the first half at a stalemate, with both teams
entering into the half scoreless and looking to get some points on
the scoreboard. Rollins was only able to fire off four shots in
the opening 45 minutes, and seemed to get stuck in the midfield due
to gusty winds that blew in opposition of their attacking
direction.
The Tars came out of the break with the wind at their backs and
all pistons firing as junior newcomer Rachel
Jakubowski collected on a Joy
Powell pass in the 50 minute, sending a long shot into the
right corner of the goal past Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Dina Roper to
earn the game-winning goal of the evening.
Rollins built on their momentum as the second half progressed,
with Jessica
Deese collecting a pass from Lindsay
Giblin to put the ball in goal, and Chelsea
Brady heading the ball between the pipes off of an assist
from Julie
Gatt with only 54 seconds left in the game. The Tars notched a
total of seven points overall, and have tallied three or more goals
in all seven wins so far this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle
Dillingham began the night for the Tars, walking away with a
1.000 save percentage on the evening before junior Stephanie
Woelfel came in to conclude the game between the pipes in the
final 15 minutes. Embry-Riddle collected a total of 10 saves
throughout the night, with Roper tacking on six to her season
total, reserve goalie Breyln Bingham tallying one, and the team
getting credit for three more saves.
The No. 10 Tars kept their firing squad in check throughout the
bout as they rattled off 18 shots, 14 of which came in the second
half. Thirteen of those 18 shots were on the mark, dwarfing the
Eagles who were only able to get four overall shots and one shot on
goal all evening. Rollins also silenced Embry-Riddle 4-0 in corner
kicks as they saw more time in their attacking end throughout the
match and successfully kept the Eagles from scoring
opportunities.
The nationally ranked Rollins women's soccer team continues
their season on the road as they look ahead to Saturday when they
open their 2008 Sunshine State Conference season against the Eckerd
College Tritons. The Tars travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. for a
5:00 p.m. conference showdown, which will be immediately followed
by the men with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to
all of the action live on the Citizen's Bank of Florida Tars Sports
