Morrow, Ga. (September 22, 2008) - The Tars
were not able to capture their second win in a row against Clayton
State on Monday night, falling to the Lakers 2-1 in double
overtime. The Tars drop to 4-4 on the season and have Sunshine
State Conference foe Eckerd coming up on the schedule this
weekend.
Both teams played a tough and physical game in the first half as
the host Lakers took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Rollins got a break
with five minutes left as Blade Zych made a hard run into the box
and was pulled down by Lakers goalkeeper David Cristofoli, setting
up a Rollins penalty kick. Tom Makin made good on the try, beating
the keeper with a strike into the lower left corner of the goal to
knot the score at one apiece.
Neither Clayton State nor Rollins threatened in the first overtime
and the game moved to a final period. The second overtime went much
like the first with each side trading runs into the box, but
neither team could put one in the back of the net. The Lakers were
able to finally to score in the 105th minute as the shot was lifted
just over Tars keeper Aaron Rockeach's head.
The Tars were able to get 14 shots, while Clayton St. got 13
shots on frame. Tars keeper Aaron Rokeach was able to make two
saves as he faced many quality scoring chances.
Aaron Rokeach's record is now 4-4 on the season and looks to
keep his confidence as the Tars head into conference play for the
rest of the year. Clayton State improves their record to 4-3-1 on
the season and completed their fifth overtime contest of the
season.
The Tars will take on Eckerd on Saturday September 27 in St.
Petersburg, Fla. in their next contest. Kick-off is scheduled for
7:30 p.m. and is the second half of a doubleheader between the Tars
and Tritons women's teams.
