ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (September 27, 2008)
The Rollins men's soccer team was unable to find
success in 90 minutes of action on North Soccer Field as the Tars
took on conference rival Eckerd College on Saturday evening at the
Triton's home pitch. With the 4-0 defeat, the Tars descend to
4-5-0 and 1-1-0 in conference play, while Eckerd pulls ahead to an
overall record of 7-2-0, and 2-0-0 in SSC action.
The Tars were able to fire off five shots, including two on
goal, and led the game with five corner kicks in comparison to
Eckerd's three. But the Tritons were able to find six shots, five
of which were on goal as their offense was able to capitalize on
more opportunities than the Rollins offensive line.
Eckerd put their name up on the scoreboard with two early goals
in the contest from senior forward Joseph Ilett in both the ninth
and 13 minute. Ilett was able to collect on assists from freshman
midfielder Anthony Arico and junior forward Luke Sheekey,
respectively, to notch the first two tallies of the evening.
Freshman defender Jimmy Lawler connected to senior defender John
Fletcher as Fletcher scored the third goal early in the 49 minute,
and sophomore forward George Marchant rounded out Eckerd's goal
count on the night with a goal in the 71 minute with assists from
both Ilett and Sheekey to give the Triton's their second conference
victory of the season.
The match was a physical test of brains and brawn as both teams
tried to overcome a long-standing rivalry to pull ahead in the
contest. Overall, five yellow cards were issued for the night,
with Eckerd recording three, and Rollins grabbing the remaining
two.
The Rollins men's soccer team will take to the pitch in their
third conference game of the season as they take on Florida Tech in
a 5:00 p.m. matchup at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur
Field in the opening game of a Wednesday night double-header. The
women will immediately follow, with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
