MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (May 7, 2008) ' Missy
Thogmartin blasted a two run homer in the top of the seventh to pad
the lead and give fifth seeded Rollins a 4-1 win over fourth seed
Tampa at the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament Wednesday.
The Tars (39-14) advance to take on the winner of top seeded Barry
and eighth seed Albany State at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Barry.
Sherri Rabenold went 2-3 from the leadoff spot to lead Rollins'
bats. Thogmartin went 1-2 with an RBI on her homer and Jamie Rausch
hit 1-3 with two runs scored and an RBI behind a solo homer in the
second.
Nicole Anderson picked up the win and improved to 23-5 on the
year, throwing all seven innings and scattering eight hits with
seven strikeouts.
Tampa (31-12) spread the wealth with eight players all racking
up a base hit. Ashley Carrea scored the lone Spartans run with a
solo homer in the fourth. Deanna Henriott suffered the loss,
allowing 10 hits and four runs with five strikeouts.
Rollins struck first in the second with Rausch depositing a
pitch over the left center wall, making it 1-0. The Tars then
manufactured one in the top of the fourth as Rausch reached on a
fielder's choice and moved to second after an Ingrid Schumacher
single up the middle. Lauren Starcher followed with a base knock to
left that plated Rausch from first and made the score 2-0.
Tampa cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with a
solo home run by Carrea. Both teams threatened in the next two
innings, but left runners stranded. In the Rollins seventh, Kayla
McCraney led off with a pinch hit single and was replaced on the
base paths by Meghan Shaw. After a Rabenold sac bunt, Thogmartin
took a Henriott offering over the left field fence and gave the
Tars breathing room.
