BELMONT, N.C. (April 5, 2008) ' Three Tars
would score on the way to a hard fought 14-10 loss to the Belmont
Abbey Crusaders on a waterlogged Saturday afternoon in Belmont,
N.C. The loss drops Rollins to 3-8 overall, while Belmont Abbey
College advances 9-6 for a new program record.
Rollins was led by freshmen Courtney Bianculli and Lacy Goodwyn,
who both finished with three goals apiece for the afternoon.
Freshman attacker Liz Connelly tallied a pair of goals to go along
with four assists, leading the team in overall points with six.
Rounding out the goal count for Rollins were Annie Harris and
Katy Tyszko with one each, with Tyszko assisting on a Goodwyn goal
in the second half to give her two points overall for the day. In
goal for the Tars, Lisa Weber made five clean saves each half,
ending with ten for the afternoon and collecting six ground balls
to lead both teams.
The Crusaders were led by Shannon Farden with four goals and one
assist. Sophomore midfielder Laurie Jordan scored three, while Tara
Chmil and Meghan Darley both had a pair. Brianna Dignan, Kerri Gut
and Samantha Hooker added one goal apiece for the day on the way to
their final score of 14. On assists Dignan led the way with two,
while Chmil, Farden, Gut and Kristyn Kinsey each tallied one.
With wet conditions and a slippery field, the Tars were unable
to get off to a strong start. After falling behind 4-0 with 12
minutes remaining the first half, Rollins kicked into action and
fired off three unanswered goals Bianculli, Tyszko, and Goodwyn to
pull to within one point of the Crusaders as they entered into the
halftime break.
The Abbey came out of the break and retaliated with four quick
goals in the initial ten minutes, pulling ahead to a lead of 8-3,
and in the 18th minute Goodwyn and Jordan traded a pair of goals to
keep the Crusaders ahead by five.
Liz Connelly tallied the next goal of the game ripping a shot
from outside the twelve meter arc that bounced by Belmont Abbey
goalie Kate Gavin and rolled into the back of the net. But with
Darley firing a shot past Weber just seconds later, the Crusaders
were able to hold onto their lead.
Rollins was not about to let up, and two more quick goals from
Bianculli and Goodwyn, the Tars closed in on the Crusaders pulling
to within three points with a little over eight minutes remaining
in the game. The Abbey out-scored Rollins 4-3 as the clock counted
down, pulling ahead to a four point lead and walking away with a
final score of 14-10 over the Tars.
The Rollins women's lacrosse team will be back on the field
Sunday, April 6 as they make the short trip over to Queens
University of Charlotte. The Tars will take on the Royals at noon
