WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2008) - Freshman
Liz Connelly had a big game for the Tars finding success on 5 out
of 5 shots on goal, adding an assist, grabbing four ground balls,
causing one turnover, and winning six draw controls against the
Warriors of East Stroudsburg University. The Tars fought hard, but
fell to ESU in their fourth home game of the season 13-11. With the
loss, the Tars drop to 3-4, while the Warriors begin their 2008
campaign with a record of 1-0.
Freshman midfielder Lacy Goodwyn tallied two goals for the Tars,
with juniors Annie Harris and Morgan Harries, as well as the
freshmen duo of Courtney Bianculli and Katy Tyszko placing one goal
each in the cage to round-out the Tars' goal count at 11.
Tyszko would add two assists to her one goal total, with
Bianculli recording one as well for the afternoon. Bianculli and
freshman Katie Hubbell led the Tars with six ground balls each,
followed closely by Harris with five, and sophomore Annie Decker
with four. Joining Bianculli with strong defensive pressure was
freshman Sarah Rosenblit as they caused three turnovers each
throughout the game.
Lisa Weber had another solid game for the Tars. The junior
goalkeeper posted 19 saves, collected four ground balls, and caused
two turnovers for the team. East Stroudsburg goalie Kristin
Mayberry made a total of 13 saves for the day and grabbed three
ground balls.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Katie Fretz, Michelle
Mangiaruga, and Molly O'Hara, scoring five, four, and three goals,
respectively. Renee Maniscalco tallied the final goal for East
Stroudsburg for a final tally of 13. Adding support was Jamie
Wesztergom with two assists, and Mangiaruga, Maniscalco, Jocelyn
Gebhardt, and Eileen Sanderson with one assist each.
The Tars got off to a good start firing off two goals in the
first seven and a half minutes, but the Warriors exploded on a six
goal streak over the next six and a half minutes to leave the Tars
down by four with a score of 6-2. It was a back and forth contest
for the remainder of the half as both teams placed three balls into
the cage, entering into the halftime break with ESU leading
9-5.
Rollins out-shot the Warriors 6-4 in the second period, but were
unable to make a comeback in the time allotted. It was a well
matched game as Rollins and ESU made a total of 31 and 35 shots,
respectively. ESU led with 14 total draw controls, with Rollins on
their heels tallying a total of 12. Both teams were almost equal in
ground balls (Rollins 40, ESU 34), fouls (ESU 21, Rollins 20), and
turnovers (Rollins 22, ESU 20) as the game came to a close.
The Tars will be back on their home field this Wednesday, March
12, when they take on the Division II Bulldogs of Bryant University
