WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 5, 2008) ' Sophomore
attackman Charlie Shelly scored two goals for the Tars off of
assists from freshman Peter Harvey and junior Jay McDermott in
Wednesday afternoon's 14-2 loss to fellow Deep South Conference
member Wingate University. With the setback, the Tars drop to 1-5,
0-1 in DSC play, while the Bulldogs begin their conference season
with an overall record of 3-1, 1-0.
The Tars could not get past the number eight ranked Wingate
defense in their first conference match-up of the season. In their
defensive zone, Rollins saw action from freshman goaltender Zach
Cole, who made 13 saves and snagged two interceptions from inside
the crease throughout the contest. Reserve goalie Doug O'Brien
allowed only one goal and collected three saves in fourth quarter
action, and would successfully get the ball downfield three
times.
Sophomore defender Steven Carr saw plenty of action both in the
defensive zone and in the midfield, grabbing four interceptions
from the Bulldogs. Carr was backed-up by fellow defensemen Andrew
Cohen and Alex Gauthier, who added two caused turnovers each, with
freshman Alik Alfus finding a home in the zone as he worked in the
defense with a long pole for the first time this season.
The Bulldogs found a home in their offensive end throughout the
contest, with senior middie Stephen Torkington finding the back of
the cage four times, and assisting on a Costello goal in the third
quarter. Behind Torkington were junior Ryan Otterblad with three
goals, three assists, and senior Bob Chinn posting two goals and
one assist. Five other Bulldogs would put the ball in the cage on
the way to a 12 point lead over the Tars, with all but four Wingate
goals finding an assist.
The Tars scoreless for the first two quarters, and wouldn't post
a goal on the scoreboard until late in the third when Shelly was
finally able to work his way around the tight Bulldog defense and
find a feed from McDermott with 3:35 left in the period.
The tally would remain at one for Rollins until the fourth
quarter, when Shelly would grab a feed from Harvey and place the
ball behind Bulldog goalie Chad Watson to score the final goal for
the Tars with eight and a half minutes left in the game.
The Rollins College men's lacrosse team will be back in action
on their home field this Tuesday, March 11, when they take on the
University of New England Nor'easters at noon.
