WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 11, 2008) ' Junior
Andy Katz and freshman Peter Harvey tallied a hat trick apiece as
the Rollins men's lacrosse team defeated the University of New
England 10-8 in their first ever NCAA win on Tuesday afternoon.'
With the win, the Tars advance to 2-5, and the Nor'easters drop to
1-2 overall.
Along with their three goals, Katz posted two assists on the
first two goals for the Tars, helping to get the ball rolling and
build some momentum.' Harvey added one more assist a short while
later to keep the Tars in the game.'
Junior Drew Bernstein was right behind Katz and Harvey, scoring
two goals and assisting on one, followed by Charlie Shelly and Jay
McDermott who each added one goal for the afternoon.' Matty Ryan
assisted on the final goal of the day, to round-out the goal count
at 10 goals, five assists for the Tars.
Freshman goalie Zach Cole kept Rollins in contention with the
Nor'easters, making 17 of 18 total saves throughout the game.'
Cole, who was penalized with one second left in the first quarter,
sat in the penalty box entering into the second, allowing fellow
freshman Doug O'Brien to step in cage and make a save for the Tars
as he spent the beginning of the second period in the game.
The Nor'easters were led by Bobby Labbe who scored the first
goal of the contest, and added a second for the first goal of the
fourth quarter.' Junior goalie Andy Briggs made 11 saves throughout
the game, collecting three groundballs and causing two
turnovers.
Six more players found the back of the cage for the Nor'easters
as Steve Smith, Jon Ebert, Dan Leyden, Mike Nawrocki, Steven Beem,
and Chad DeLuca scored one goal each.' Smith added two assists to
his one goal, with Ebert, Patrick Bishop, and Mike Sagaert tallying
one assist each to help UNE to an eight goal, five assist
total.
The Nor'easters pulled ahead in the first quarter with two quick
goals by Labbe and Leyden.' But with a man-up opportunity,
Bernstein grabbed a feed from Katz and put the ball in cage.' The
duo connected again a minute and a half later to bring the score to
2-2 with a little over four minutes left in the quarter, but a
quick goal by UNE's Beem with 47 seconds remaining allowed the
Nor'easters to start the second quarter ahead of Rollins with a
score of 3-2.
Both teams tallied one goal each in a slow-moving second period,
entering into halftime with a goal count with UNE ahead 4-3.' The
Nor'easters came out firing at the start of the third quarter,
tallying a goal from DeLuca to pull ahead by two.' But the Tars
came out of their locker room on a mission, and with Harvey and
Katz trading two goals each in the last nine minutes, Rollins
entered into the fourth quarter with a 7-5 lead.
Both teams placed the ball in the cage three more times in a
teeter-tottering fourth quarter that saw the score tied twice.' But
the Tars were able to keep their two goal lead in the end and earn
their second win of the season.
The Rollins men's lacrosse team will be back in action on
Sunday, March 15 when they take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce
University at 1:00 p.m.
