WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2008) - Freshman
goalie Zach Cole made an impressive 18 saves in Sunday afternoon's
contest against Franklin Pierce University. The Tars, who held onto
the lead for the first quarter, slipped in the second to fall
behind the Ravens and were unable to surpass them for the remainder
of the game, dropping to FPU 13-10. The Tars sit at 2-6, while the
Ravens tally their first win of their 2008 season and advance to
1-1 overall.
Scoring his first ever goal in his playing career was freshman
midfielder Alik Alfus. Alfus, who was wide open off of a fast
break, received a feed from Charlie Shelly behind cage and swiftly
placed the ball behind the keeper to tally the first goal of the
second quarter.
The Tars were led in total points by sophomore Chris Gorman, who
recorded two goals and four assists for the afternoon. Gorman was
followed by freshman Charlie Shelly who had a total of two goals,
two assists. Freshman Peter Harvey and junior Andy Katz tallied two
goals apiece to give the Tars 10 for the day.
The Ravens were headed-up by senior Luke Ferreira with six
goals, one assist. Sophomore Lucas Hamory tallied a hat trick and
two assists, and was closely followed by Jason Flanigan with two
goals, and Jon Martinez and Russell Hodson with one apiece. Jack
Scanlan added two assists, with Ryan Boller and Spencer Murray
contributing one each for FPU.
Rollins got off to a strong start pulling ahead of the Ravens in
the first quarter by three, but with just nine seconds left in the
period, Ferreira would find the back of the cage to put the Ravens
up on the scoreboard entering into the second quarter.
Alfus' goal to start off the second quarter helped keep the Tars
motivated, but Ferreira would deflate the excitement with three
quick goals in a little less than two minutes to enter into the
halftime break with a score tied at 5-5.
It was a back and forth game for the remainder of the contest,
with Rollins coming out of the locker room to another Ferreira
goal. Harvey would quickly answer back to tie the score at six,
followed by yet another goal by Ferreira. But Rollins was not about
ready to give up just yet, and with a goal from Shelly with seven
and a half minutes left in the quarter, the Tars were tied once
again with a score of 7-7.
Franklin Pierce rattled off three goals to end the third quarter
with a 10-7 lead, but Rollins came back in the fourth with goals
from Gorman, Bernstein, and Katz to balance-out the score one more
time at 10-10 with 5:22 remaining in the game. The two teams
battled it out for the rest of the contest, and with two goals from
FPU's Flanigan, and one from Hamory, the Ravens pulled ahead to a
three point lead to end the game.
The Tars will be back in action in their second to last home
game of the season on Tuesday, March 18 when they take on the
Dominican College Chargers at 3:00 p.m.
