Tars Controlled by Belmont Abbey in 20-4 Defeat

BELMONT, N.C. (March 28, 2008) - In their first road game of the season, the Rollins College men's lacrosse team fell to a 12-0 lead at halftime and was unable to recover in the remaining periods, ultimately suffering a 20-4 loss on Friday afternoon on the campus of Belmont Abbey College. The Tars drop to 2-9 overall, while The Abbey picks up their third straight win to advance to 3-4 on the season.

Leading the Tars in points was freshman midfielder Peter Harvey with three out of the four goals for Rollins. Sophomore attackman Charlie Shelly tallied one goal for the afternoon, with Chris Gorman and Matty Ryan assisting on one goal apiece.

Sophomore long pole Andrew Cohen saw plenty of action in the all ends of the field, collecting six ground balls and finding a shot on goal. Reserve goalie Doug O'Brien found time on the field out of the cage in the in the third quarter playing defensive midfield, and later suited back up to make a save as he took over for Zach Cole halfway through the fourth quarter. Cole would walk away with 20 saves for the afternoon.

Belmont Abbey attacker Aaron Flood scored six goals and assisted on six others for 12 points, while Michael Brown posted five goals and five assists for the second-straight game. Jedd Gardner added five goals and an assist. Jon Fugitt, Brian Watson, Matt Spivey and James Regan each contributed one goal.

Fugitt also posted a pair of assists, while Gardner, Adam Basso, Miles Elliott, Tom Ottman, Spivey and Watson all had one as ten different players registered at least one point on the day.

Belmont Abbey controlled the game from the beginning, holding the Tars to just two shots in the first two periods, walking into the half with a 12 point lead. Rollins came out of the break with a fresh outlook scoring all four of their goals in the third quarter, but were out-scored in the final period 6-0.

The Tars will be back on the field this Sunday, March 30, when they travel to Saint Andrew's Presbyterian College in Luarinberg, N.C. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
