WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 29, 2008) ' The
Rollins softball team opened their conference season with a 3-1
loss to the Barry University Buccaneers on Friday evening at Lake
Island Park. The Tars drop to 3-6, 0-1, while the Bucs improve to
14-2, 1-0.
Thogmartin led the Tars on the evening going 2-2, while newcomer
Monica Meadows went 1-2 with an RBI in the third inning.
Rollins used all three pitchers as Nicole Anderson started
things off on the mound, pitching three innings and giving up two
hits while striking out three Buccaneers. Ingrid Schumacher made
the next appearance for two innings as she struck out two batters.
Rachael Foster came in as the Tars' final pitcher giving up three
runs on two hits, one error and one strikeout picking up the loss
on the evening (1-4).
Amber Jack started in the circle for Barry, pitching 4.1 innings
and giving up one run on four hits and striking out two. Megan
Young earned her fourth victory of the season as she threw 2.2
innings giving up only one hit and striking out four Tar
batters.
Barry was led by junior Ashley Likens who went 1-3 with an RBI
for the Bucs and Natalie Heeley who also registered one hit in
three at bats on the evening.
The Tars scoring began in the bottom of the third inning as
Rachael Foster was hit by a pitch and Thogmartin had a sacrifice
bunt to advance Foster to second. Freshman Monica Meadows singled
to right center to bring home Foster and put Rollins on the
board.
Two fielding errors by the Tars in the bottom of the sixth
allowed Barry to notch two runs and take the lead as Heeley and
Likens scored for Barry. Likens, a power hitter for the Bucs,
doubled to centerfield in the top of the seventh inning to send
home junior Shyla Rider, 3-0.
Rollins would be unable to recover in their seventh inning
attempt as the Buccaneers tallied their first conference win of the
season.
The Tars will be back in action tomorrow, March 1 when finish
their weekend series with the Barry University Buccaneers. First
pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
